In 1969 I traded my AFB off of my 67 326 HO even up, for a 66 GTO Tri Power setup for that exact reason, so I wasn't going to dispute the owners reasoning...................LOL

The 326 HO liked the Tri Power too. I was a senior in HS and attended the Vo tech auto mechanics school which had a chassis dyno. I dynoed the FB at 220 RWHP with just the trips, no headers, and the 068 stock cam.

Bought a 66 GTO-tri power 4 speed 3.90-marinia turquoise/black vinyl top in 1968 with 16,000mi. and paid $1,600.00. Took it home and said Mom you gotta drive this car. So we went for a spin. Miss her.

I don't know but the person who said they couldn't keep them synchronized didn't have any business driving that car as there was/is not adjustment on the front & rear carbs. That person should have been driving a 4 door Biscayne not a Great one becuse that person was just plain stupid.

It's not a prerequisite to have any mechanical knowledge to own or buy a muscle car.
All you have to do is listen to some of the idiotic ramblings from owners then and now to know you don't have to be smart to own one, just have good credit or a nice bank account.

BTW, the early multiple aftermarket carb setups (40s 50s) did have idle circuits in all the carbs and they did have to be synchronized to run well at idle. J.C. Whitney used to sell a unit to attach to each air horn as you went through the idle adjustments on each carb and it was called an synchronizer, basically a vacuum meter to get them all the same and balanced for idle quality. GM side stepped that PITA problem by just using the end carbs as secondaries, with no idle circuits to simplify the multiple carb setups.

A well known movie car with that type of multiple carbs on it would be John Milners Deuce coupe in American Graffiti. It had most likely 6 Stromberg 97s on the engine and would be typical of hot rods of that era. That type of setup along with European multiple carbed sports cars did have to be fiddled with constantly to keep them right, hence the reason some people thought all cars with multiple carbs would need serviced frequently. There is some basis to the myth, however not with GM cars since 57 with Tri Power, as the engineering eliminated that facet on their cars.

I also forgot to mention that I have also seen Tri Power cars with the fuel lines blocked off on the end carbs in an effort to save fuel........................yeah that'll work real good.................

Was in a parts store a few yrs. back an older fella is wanting a longer carb idle adjustment screw. Parts guy ask whats this go on and the fella says Pontiac tri power center carb. This got my attention. Then the guy tells the guy about a bunch of BS about tri power carbs. I wait and follow him outside a talk alittle sense too him.

My first car a 66 cutlass (pontiac powered) that I just put back on the road I bought for $40. in 1977 it had house carpet in it and was painted blue with a paint brush. I still had a lot of fun with it through highschool blew up the 330 olds and put a 350 poncho I bought for $20 with a crane cam 4 barrel intake installed I blew the doors off my buddies lemans he took it out of to put a 400 in he wasnt happy but I was! been a poncho guy ever since

I purchased my first 1968 GTO in 1980 for $700 - still have the car today (signature above). Like Boss posted...In 2000, I purchased (6) 1968 GTO 4-speed project cars, along with several cube vans worth of parts (engines, transmissions, differentials, enduras, fenders...) $3,500

1980, purchase my initial 1968 gto (still have it) for $700. IN 2000, I purchased (6) 1968 GTOs, some complete, some parts cars, including several cube vans full of parts (enduras, hoods, differentials, doors, fenders, engines, transmissions...) for...$3,500. Just a couple of pictures...

I had a friend of mine who has passed now but had a a 4 dr Biscayne factory 427! I bought a 1970 Judge in 1985 Pallidium Silver $2000.00. Real Judge 4 speed special order axle 3.90 all complete including the real carb!!!! Had a lot of fun in this car and still having fun sliding sideways just this summer through an intersection!!!

In 1980 I paid $500 for my 1968 Firebird 350 2bbl 2-spd Coupe. It was a car that I walked past everyday on the way to and from school. I thought it was the coolest car. I finally bought it when I was 15 from money I made working at a fish'n'chips joint. This is the car 33 years later. It is my FirstBird.

Ok...get this, in the mid 70s I lived in metro Detroit (still do) my next door neighbor had a silver convertible 70 Judge RA IV 4spd that I used to bounce frisbees off as a kid..that car drew me towards Pontiacs my whole life. I bought a 69 400 firebird with every option available except a Ram Air motor--2000.00 1983. 1984- Passed on a 65 GTO convertible 3x2 4spd for 650.00 because we had a deal for 500.00--my dad was a man of principle.
68 Formula S Barracuda convertible triple black, 383 4spd, needed a clutch told the guy he was nuts for asking 2800.00 in 1985.
69 Trans Am with a 455, stacked gauges, original except motor 4000.00 OBO passed on it! 1987
701/2 RS Camaro 350 4spd, 3.73s 2800.00 1988, bought it
69 white 400 Firebird w 428 RAIV cam/heads frame off 5500.00 1990
69 RS Z28 tilt Rosewood wheel, Houndstooth, gauges, PW, DZ 4.10s, Hugger Orange white stripes NOM, 14000.00 1995 (made a killing)
69 Firebird convertible 400 Ram Air III 4spd NOM 8500.00 Flew to DC and drove it home.1996
69 400 Firebird w/455 built. Flew to Ft Myers Fla & drove it home 12000.00 In 2000. (sold to my friend for same)
68 Lemans convertible, 350 4spd 3.23, PHS, Nightshade Green, 9000.00 2003. Cloned to GTO (fraud!) and Brandy wine colored now with 455 RA IV cam. Current summer fun car!

In 1976 I bought a 70 Bonneville convert with the 455 and full options minus AC for $855.00. The same year I bought a 67 firebird convert with the 400 4 speed for $50.00, the guy bought it new for his new wife and she only drove it for 2 years and it got parked in the garage and sat there until I bought it in 76, she said she didn't like it but held onto it for sentimental reasons, they were going to junk it and rescued it. body and interior was like new and only had something like 23,000 miles on it, I had to do a complete tune-up and brake job on it before moving it from his garage. I bought a 69 Grand Prix in 1996 for $1300, the kids father owned a shop and he rebuilt the suspension, motor trans, brakes and had the car ready for paint, the kid was 16 and his father didn't want him to have it because of the power, he sold it cheap just to get gone before his son got home. I felt bad but figured if not me someone else would get it.
