Default black factory paint on 87 cutlass salon

I have a 87 Cutlass with the original paint and wondered if it would buff out OK and what would be best product to start with . It's in great shape and just has minor flaws . Shines great now but as with any black it would just be that much better if it can be buffed out . I think it may be Lacquer on it from the factory ? Thanks much for any tips .

I’m sure you can buff it out some. If you have some shine on it now I would try a very light compound or polish before going too heavy. I use chemical guys products and they have a hybrid compound that works really well. I wouldn’t go any more aggressive than that.

I also really like this cutting polish that is not very aggressive but gives great results:

They also have a special black wax that worked wonders on my Grand National :

I’ve been using their torqx buffer with great results.

Thanks for the feed back ,I'll have to give this product a try . I have a few spots that may not come out for instance , there's some marks where the Po had a bra on the fromt and the wind movement I assume wore some marks into the paint a little . The trunk area mostly looks like very small dots (like tree sap) but I will have to check it a little closer . I don't really feel it and it has a great shine but if it will clean up it will just look a lot better I'm sure . Thanks again

First I would determine what kind of paint is on the car. If you can find an inconspicuous part rub it with some compound or heavy polish. If you get color on your rag, you have lacquer, enamel, or maybe some waterborne paint. GM was experimenting with paint in this era. If you get nothing or just a haze, then you have clearcoat. Use the applicable product for the kind of paint.

If it is NOT clearcoat I would soak it in Meguires #7 and let is sit overnight. Either kind of paint I would finish it off with an orbital buffer to keep the swirl marks out.
