dome light; plain or w/design
Ok, this is more of a curiousity;
When did GM change the dome lamp lens from having an imprinted star-like design, to being plain? My guess was that it was changed somewhere in the mid-1970's. Thanks!

I'll tell ya how you can know my man. Look it up at Ames. Firebird catalog shows elongated lens cover for 67 & 68. Shows the round little starburst for 1969-81. Not saying that is absolute. Just saying, that's what Ames lists for being right.
Did learn something from your question though. Did not realize there was an option for dome/reading light from 76-81. It is different. curved rectangular light. Good question.

Later years listed both plain and sunburst lenses as being used on all models, but not why.
Plain was #20013679 Sunburst was #8732777 |

well, my reccolection of finding the "starburst" one twenty-ish years ago, was that it was only on older cars, and by the 1980's the plain one was there;
I had a 1980 Montel Carlo, and 1981 Malibu sedan, both had the plain lens... I seem to recall that the newer second gen cars also had the plain one. This all culminated in me scrounging for every "starburst" one I could find (which wouldn't break up when trying to remove), so that I have a small collection of them... but not a single plain one.

I'm wondering if they correlate with deluxe or standard interior?

that's something I had never considered;
But I kind of doubt it. The plain lens does tend to appear a bit more modern, while the "starburst" one does seem a bit more "1960's" or "1970's".
