Did the 70 Firebirds (Trans Ams) ever come from the factory with the long thin strip guard proctectors on the sides?

I checked a Firebird red book and yes they were an option available with custom trim.

TODD,

I've looked over some of my information, and from what I can gather, body side moldings weren't available 1970. They became available on all Firebirds except Trans Ams starting in '71 and it looks to me that '77 was the first year that you could order them on Trans Ams.

I know that many Trans Ams were fitted with after market or dealer installed side moldings back then. I think Pontiac stylists thought with wheel flares, the body side moldings would clutter up the the otherwise smooth beltline of the Trans Am.

Maybe Jonn Witzke can help us a little on the '77 availability.

Jim

I think the vinyl molding was available in 1970.
1977 was the first year for the color co-ordinated molding (to match car paint), I think.

I just received a new copy of "Illistrated Restoration Guides Trans Am and Firebird Formula" (Silver 1973 SD 455 Formula on the cover). On page 134 under category "Front End Sheet Metal 1970 1972". They list RPO B384 black colored body side moldings as being available on all Firebirds except the Trans Am (page 138). Part# 480641 right side 480642 left side.

I just got together with Rocky and we went through his literature and found the following:

The 1970 Accessorizer and Sales Manual makes no mention of body side moldings for any Firebird models.

In all of our 1970 factory literature and 1970 magazine articles featuring the 1970 Firebirds, there are no pictures of any Firebird models with body side moldings.

The '71,'72, and '73 Sales Manual and Accessorizers each state that the B84 Vinyl Body Side Moldings were optional on all Firebird models except the Trans Am.

Page B-14 of the 1972 Dealers Manual is headed Firebird Decor, Protective Moldings and Wheel Covers. There are illustrations of all the available moldings on all four Firebird models and there is no mention at all of body side moldings in the Trans Am section.

Hope this helps,
Jim

Jim, I would trust your data about the B84 side strip option more than the bookquote thread I entered. Although it gives good general Firebird information, I'm finding other data to be incomplete or questionable.
