On my 69 GTO, I run 215-65-15 on the front and 275-60-15 on the back.

A 215/60/15 has a tire width of 8.46" and a diameter of 25.16.

A 215/70/15 has a tire width of 8.46" and a diameter of 26.85.

So the width of the tire is the same, but the 70 series is about 1.5" taller.

Both tires should fit on your car fine on either a 6 or 7" rim - if the BS is correct.

Just a guess, but I think the BS of the 7" rim was probably about 1" shy of what was needed.
Maybe you are right. I've never measured the backspace on my 7" rims. They are Rally IIs but I have no idea what the original application was. Did they vary the BS on the Rally IIs over the years?
They are sitting in my garage at the moment. I'll measure when I get home.

I finally got around to measuring the BS on my 15" RallyII. It seems to be 4" even. There's a tire on it so hard to find anything that would clear the tire and lay flat on the bead area of the rim.... Because of that, I may be off a quarter so it may be 4.25...but no deeper than that.

I run 235/60 R15s all around. On occassion, on an unusual incline, making a turn I will hear a slight rub but its rare. This on a 69 GTO Convertible.

Thanks. Its a nicely optioned PHS doc GTO convertible. 3.55 Saf-T-Trak rear, factory AC (upgraded to r134a), deluxe seat belts, tictoc clock (that actually works), power Fr disk brakes, hide-away headlights, console shifter with console box, trunk release, underhood light, trunk light, hood tach, remote driver mirror (1970 mirrors color-matched) and a really nice interior. Its not a #s matching engine but its is a periord correct 400 with correct Qjet and RA manifolds. I upgraded exhaust to SS and upgraded starter to a more powerful ministarter. I decided to upgrade the Turbo 400 to a 4sp th200r4 trans. Its a terrific combination with the 3.55 posi rear. Great on the highway (75mph at 2400rpms) and still does a wicked burnout. Believe it or not, it gets close to 20mpg now when my foot's not into it.

Its a really fun car to drive!

71 t/a -> holy crap 275 on the back?
i'd love to see a picture of the front and back of yours.

I'm in the same boat, I have some 15 inch rally 2 rims and need new tires.

I was debating 235-60r15 on front and 255-60r15 on back however it appears to be totally safe 225-60-r15 is gonna be the non - rub choice ...
