Question New to me 68 GTO Convertible - Need some help decoding a Body Tag

It's been a while since I last posted here as I sold my 67 GTO a while back.
That being said, I picked up a 68 4spd Convertible w/ Hood tach.

Having a hard time decoding it as I'm somewhat "on the spectrum"

Any experts out there able ot help? How can I be sure this is a factory 4speed car?
Thanks!

Obtaining a copy of the original invoice from Pontiac Historical Services would note the original options on your '68 GTO convert. Whether equipped w a factory 3spd Dearborn trans or a 4 spd Muncie, or as an original T400 car that has been converted, it will be hard to discern if the transmission has been changed over the years.

BtW, your Dec 8th '67 dated heads "fit" well with 3rd week of Dec body build out of Pontiac home plant. A few hints to original build can be picked up on, esp if the engine is non original. Quickly looking over the car, a manual trans '68 GTO will have the manual trans neutral safety switch mounted above the clutch pedal. Getting under the car, I would look for the presence of the stamped steel braces that mount from the inboard of the front attachment of lower control arm & continue diagonally to the large frame crossmember. Those braces will attach behind the nuts that tighten the bolts that pass through the upper control arm bushings on top of the R/E center housing.

'68 GTO (& Firebird) manual trans Hurst shifters had a boot shaped "kicker" to the reverse lever. This kicker profile on the reverse lever depressed the side cover mounted reverse light switch when the factory installed Hurst shifter was put in reverse. On '69 model Pontiacs with manual transmissions, the backup light function went to a small opaque plastic switch mounted on down low on top of the column.

As mentioned, the 68 HURST four speed shifter was a one year only shifter, the reverse light mounting bracket is part of the shifter body.

Gotta call you on this one OPH.
68 manual shift models did not have a neutral start switch above the clutch. That started in 69.
A jumper was used across the NSS plug terminals.

You are spot on Ed. Remembrances of checking out & parting too many '69 & later stick cars. Though have owned several '68's, have pulled even more '68 Pontiac A-body floor shift columns & no lower legs on those, the lower leg being the lever that would be needed to connect to the back drive linkage, which was a '69+ thing on manual trans cars.

Appreciate you sharing your '68's pics, interesting that GM Packard Electric was including a connector & a jumper in the dash harness for the NSS provision. Btw, how late in production was your '68 GTO built?

Thanks OPH. It's a Fremont 05A.

Mom's car, it was bought new in late May '68
Aside from a timing gear and wheels, it was never touched mechanically until I replaced the engine in the mid eighties. Kept the original though and it's still all numbers matching.

Car was taken apart 20 years ago and I started the restoration around 2017 when it was just a bare shell with lots of boxes.
Thanks to you and others on this forum to refresh my memory of how everything goes back together, I hope to have it moving on its own power by late spring next year.

The cylinder head ID is further below where you found the date code.
The 2 center/Siamese exhaust ports have large raised numerals - should be 1 and 6 (16).

Block code is on passenger side - front flat face of block - near where cylinder head meets the block.
Should be stamped stamped WT or WS

Partial VIN on block is on passenger side - lower front block flat face - alongside the timing cover.
Low down near where oil pan meets the block vicinity.
Should be stamped 28Pxxxxxx

The date code on the block - will look just like the one you found on the head.
Located around where the distributor goes inside the block.

Date on (factory) intake is next to thermostat housing.

Good Luck and Congrats on your new GTO
Is it still Primavera color ?

Any chance you could show a pic of the car?

Yes, still the factory color, although repainted
It had a Hurt shifter in it, I am now curious if it came with that option. Thinking first thing I do is order a PHS.

That's a beauty! I have news for you though...that is not Primavera Beige. Color change for a beige car is understandable.
Back when I first moved to Atlanta 1979-80, there was lady in the city who had to be in her late 60s that had a primavera beige 68 convertible in absolutely pristine condition. I used to see her driving down Peachtree Street with the top down and a head scarf. Had a vanity plate that said MY GTO . It's the only Primavera GTO I've ever seen.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it appears the paint code on the trim tag is RR? Looking at the color chip chart for 1968, R is Solar Red? https://www.autocolorlibrary.com/pag...8-Pontiac.html

I was able to rub some paint off the block. Doesn't seem to be the OG 68 powerplant based on these pics correct?

I'm seeing T-2 as the color, where are you seeing the RR?
