Question 68 firebird over axle exhaust

Anyone have pics of their 3" system that goes over the rear end?

Or

Would 2.5" from mufflers restrict a 600hp cae?

2.5 tailpipes will restrict, Mufflers ? depends if they are like an Ultraflow they may work..When I was running low 11's pulling the 2.5 inch tailpipes off a 3 inch front system and 2.5 Ultraflows I picked up a solid tenth and 1 mph..maybe a tad more

I will try to get some pictures tomorrow. I have 3" over the rear on my 67 Bird. I did move thebrear or the springs over 1-1/2" with some offset bushings. But i had 3" on it woth the springs in the stock location too. Moving the springs made it easier when I re-made the tail pipes and added tire clearance

System on my 68 Firebird from RARE. It uses 3" tailpipes with oval 2x4" head pipes and X-crossover. I ordered custom made Spintech mufflers with a 3" thick case because I am anal about a low handing exhaust and all the popular off the shelf mufflers are 4 3/4" thick. Mufflers were made with 2x4 oval in and 3" round out. According to Spintech these mufflers eat less than 10hp on 800+hp alcohol Outlaw motors, but they are pretty loud. I also cut the tailpipes to install V-band clamps for service but installed them on the kick up part of the tailpipe because the V-band OD is more than 3" and would be a catch point. Note the tailpipes did require a few cuts to fit the way I wanted them as well as a very small pinch in the vise to get another 1/8" fit between the quarter and leaf spring. I didn't use the RARE hangers, fabbed up something instead. Now I just have to raise the headers a bit to be happy. Note some of these pics are before final welding.

Thanks guys. Typo meant 69.

Already have 3" system and Dynomax ST mufflers with turn downs before the axle. Always run at the track through the exhausts but I'm looking at using tail pipes to get the gases out the back rather than underneath.

Here's a couple of pics of the 3" tail pipes on our 68 Firebird. The tips are also 3". Pipe is all Mandrell.

I used the 3" flowmaster pipes with H, running into 14" Ultraflows. Looks similar to pics below.

The one issue I had was a very tight clearance between the leaf spring and qtr panel, which would often times rub on one or the other.

I cut 8" or so off of the tail pipe and installed 2.25" chrome tips to provide better clearance. I initially did this using a clamp so I could do back to back testing at the track, which showed zero difference running the 3" or 2.25" tip. I since welded the tips on to clean it up and get rid of the cumbersome clamp.

Couple of pics
