Default NAPA 85-3000 Battery Charger

Mine took a dump yesterday, wouldn't charge in any mode. It starts to charge but within a few seconds it quits, then it tries again in a minute or so, charges a few seconds, quits again, etc. It acted like a switch or relay of some sort wasn't staying in. Even when it did charge the voltage and amps were lower than they should have been so I suspected a part when bad inside someplace.

Took it apart and did some testing. I traced the problem down to a part called an "interrupt". No part number on it and the sticker on it was not legible.

Ended up jumping it out with a wire and it now works fine. Just wondering what the negatives are from this modification if any.

I was unable to find this part anyplace on-line, but my Google and electrician skills are pretty limited.

Any help or advice would be appreciated....tks....

You might try 1-800-621-5485. Its the tech line for Shumacher Electric. I believe they are the manufacturer for that unit.

That part is the circuit breaker .... protects the machine if the leads are shorted, or the battery is drawing too much current.

Every time they trip, they tend to get a bit easier to trip ... and they just degrade with age. Should be a fairly easy part to find a replacement for, quite possible it's discontinued and superseded to a new part number.

I don't have that model but I'm guessing its a thermal interrupt. It limits the duty cycle to prevent overheating the charger it it trys to pull high current for too long. Bypassing it just risk overheating if trying to charge a bad battery but shouldn't be a problem if if you watch what you charging and not trying to bring back batteries that are too far gone.

Discontinued. It's a 120amp 32vdc breaker. Should be able to retro fit any similar breaker.

Or .... leave it jumped and watch the amp gauge ... if it pegs ... turn the amps down.

I also found some manual reset DC switches with over 100 amp ratings. I'd feel better if it were in place and working to protect things in case I grounded out a lead, etc.....

Just an update, and info for anyone else who runs into this issue with their battery charger. I was able to find a Buss auto-reset 100amp DC breaker for $22 on Ebay.

The OEM is NLA, at least for my model number and would have been closer to $60 if I could have found one.

There are "manual" resent DC breakers available for as little as $10 on-line, which would work just as well but being inside the case an access panel would have been required to re-set the breaker if it tripped.......Cliff
