I run a HF 12k winch on my open trailer. It's been great! I've pulled cars that were stuck to the ground, had frozen brakes, up steep driveways, and even a couple fullsize trucks.
As for powering it, I've done it both ways. If it's pulling power from the truck, I leave it running while using the winch. Right now I use a standard top post battery. I leave it in the garage until I need it. It's with all the straps and D-rings, so I cant forgot it. The 12ft remote works well. It's plenty long enough for me to stand out of harms way while using it.

Thanks guys. Bill ,seems logical. Keeping battery (weight plus one less thing to transfer) with truck seems best for me.
