Default Fuel Tank

'64 GTO, I'm having a small debate whether the fuel tank is original. Did the factory use any markings to identify the tanks? It's rusty and the only marking is a capital M inside an embossed oval stamped in the top and bottom sheet metal. I have owned the car almost 50 years but that doesn't prove anything.
The tank will be relaced regardless. Just curious.
