Tom Dempsey, R. I. P.
Tom Dempsey kicked a record setting 63 yard field goal in 1970. He was born without toes on his right foot, and had similar issues with right arm. Not someone looked at as a pro athlete. He was in a care home suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s. The “virus” was his cause of death...

Yup. Played for the Saints. I remember that kick. I was 9 years old. People complained be cause he had a club foot. Said it was like he was using a sledgehammer. Said it was an unfair advantage. I say he got dealt lemons and made lemonade. RIP Tom Dempsey.

I had a book about football when I was in elementary with a chapter about him and his special shoe. Still surprised that record has stood this long.

I remember him playing for the LosAngeles Rams.
He was a huge asset. They were a pretty strong team back then and always made the playoffs. But never made it to the SuperBowl RIP Mr. Dempsey |

11 years old when that game was played. It was broadcast on CBS locally, being we lived in Mich.
Not being much of a Lions fan, I was playing football in the backyard until we got cold. Came in and watched the second half. I liked the Saints as underdogs so I was thrilled when he made 'the kick'. That took place ten months after Jan Stenarud kicked a record 48 yard FG in Super Bowl IV, in the same stadium. I remember seeing an NFL highlight reel of him (Dempsey) flattening an opponent on a kickoff return when he was playing for the Eagles. Last edited by Lightfoot; 04-06-2020 at 12:40 AM. |

Don't want to start an argument, but yes he did play for the Eagles, but not until after he made that kick for the Saints!
I was 8 years old back then (1970) & Archie Manning & Tom Dempsey were two of my heroes!!!! RIP Tom. God Bless Bill https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...closed.614419/

Saw an interview with Alex Karras, many years ago. He and his team mates were laughing so hard at the 63 yard attempt, they likely didn't make the best attempt at blocking the kick...then Tom made the kick...playing for the Saints...

An interesting side note, that kick for the win resulted in the first pick in the ensuing draft being lost and going to the Buffalo Bills. They then drafted some guy named........OJ.

OJ Simpson was drafted in 1969. Dempsey made the kick in 1970.

If there's any validity to the draft story, they lost the number 1 overall pick to the Patriots, who picked Jim Plunkett. Archie Manning was the number 2 overall pick, so maybe it's 'kind of' true.
Also, it would have to have been the last game the Saints won that year, as it wasn't the last game of the season. |

I can't speak for the early 70's
But mid-to-late 70's the Saints and Lions didn't win but about 2 or 3 games per year. Falcons and Eagles records weren't much better than that either. LA Rams used to have a cake walk into the play-offs back then. "The Kick" draft result story about OJ was a good one while it lasted. Even if not exactly correct. |
