I don't remember the other thread I read about this, but it sure seems that a lot of these solid state regulators are culprits. Newer technology obviously isn't always better.

It's not the technology......When I worked at Motorola Automotive years ago, we supplied solid state regulators to a number of automotive companies without issue.

More likely it's a application issue, where the designer does not have an idea of the application and therefore does not work correctly in the application.

Case in point....look at the situation of the Pontiac water pumps/impeller issues with Cardone....they apparently did not know about the impeller sizing, clearance issues, etc. They thought one size fits all.....

apples and oranges George. The old Motorola regs were made well and durable. You could throw one off a 5 story bldg and it would survive and work. If you hit a pothole with some of the new stuff something shakes loose.
