Default XS Pontiac Motor

Hello all,
Bought a 1968 GTO with a XS 9790079 engine in it. Looking this up shows it to be a 350 although I'm not sure what year.
Anyone know anything about this motor?
Is it a HO?
How do I tell what year it is?

Some other number on the front of the block are:
073341
EM30787

Also, the motor has 670 heads, which code out to be 1967's. Can't seem to find a date code. Can anyone tell me how to tell the date code on these?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Mike

Date code is behind/beside the distributor. Look for a 4 digit code. The block casting number is informative too. It's in the rear of the block, pass side just above the bellhousing.

Hi Doug,

Thanks. I'll check again for the date code but didn't see it yet. there is something that looks like a clock with an arrow pointing to the 5 or 6 o'clock position.

Isn't the casting code the 9790079 I noted in my orignal message?

Am also trying to tell if this is a 4-speed or auto motor as well as HP it was rated from the factory.

Thanks again for the reply!

Mike

Yeah, it is a "clock." You will also find a D and N with an arrow pointing to one of them to indicate AM or PM. So when you find the date code by the distributor, you'll know the exact hour the block was cast. The code by the distributor may look like J308 which would indicate October 30, 1968 (or 1978, etc.) The date code on the block is hard to see. A hand held mirror or one of those mirrors on an extension rod may help. The mirror on an extension rod is also handy for seeing vehicle ID numbers on the front of the block.

I didn't look closely at the original post casting number--that's it. It is a 350, but I don't know about ho or anything. What head is on it?

Here's a site the lists the locations of dates and codes. http://www.teufert.net/identify/identify.htm

The home page of that site is VERY useful. XS in 67-68 says (by that site) an XS is a 400 block. For 69 it's a 350. The casting says it's a 350, so it's probably a changing over 350--which is a 2 bbl Automatic block. Check the date code for better build info though.

Mike, look under the valve covers for the 670 dates.

What is the date code on the block? With the 670 heads it could be a 67 XS which would be quite valuable. If it is indeed a 69 XS 350 it is a base motor automatic not worth much.

With that Block Casting number, 9790079, it's a 350....
