Default Bigger Fuel Tank

I had another thread about this topic, but my questions were answered there, so I decided I would post the details of the install here as it pertains specifically to the updates/upgrades for the GT.

Today I finished the install of the 70 Grand Prix fuel tank into my 72 GT, and thought I'd share some details about the swap. I'm very pleased with the outcome, and I've attached a couple pictures of the what it took, and what it looks like after the fact.

The car now carries almost 25 gallons vs. the original 20 gallons. This was important to me as it not only will help feed the thirstier 455 going in the car (soon!), but it will also help with fewer fuel stops, especially on long highway runs. The GT is seeing more driving and longer distances lately (and for the foreseeable future), so this was the reason for making the change.

2. The install went exactly as planned. I had to create two new mounting points for the longer tank straps, so I simply modeled what the factory Grand Prix mounts looked like. I wanted to keep the straps attached to the body at both ends (though it took a bit more work) instead of simply slotting and attaching them to the frame crossbar out back. I thought this was best due to possibility of flexing from the bushings between the body and frame. It's a nice, solid mounting, just as the original tank was. Body to Body, at both ends of the straps.

3. So after filling the tank earlier today, and taking the car for a good drive (city and highway), I noticed that when full, you can not only feel the weight of the extra 5 gallons (maybe 35-40 lbs), but since the weight is added to the aft most part of the car, it acts as a bigger lever. I can tell that the next thing I will need is to add a rear sway bar (no factory rear bar currently). It was planned eventually, but I think I will need it sooner than later now.

In the end, I'm very pleased with the conversion/upgrade. I will implement the same idea in my 71 Convertible during its build.

And if any of you are thinking of a similar idea, I'll say again that it's a wonderful addition to the 70-72 series A bodies. In my case, I was able to source a good used tank from a 70 GP @ our local salvage yard, and that ensured all of the fuel and vapor return lines were a perfect match.

Default 455 Install

Today was a fun day... first fire up of the (new) 455 in the GT!

As with most of my projects, it took me longer than I wanted to get here, but the 455 is finally installed, cam break-in is complete, and I put about 100 miles of driving on it today. Tomorrow I hope to get in another 100 or so miles of driving. Wow, what an improvement over the tired 350 2bbl.

Quick refresher... I built this 1972 vintage 455 bone stock. Aside from a 0.030" overbore, I simply freshened up the bottom end (stock except for ARP rod bolts and forged pistons), 067 cam, and even went with the odd duck (unloved?) 7L5 heads (same functionality as the 7M5). It comes in right at 8:1, and ran all day without a hint of detonation on 91 octane (temp in the 80's & vacuum advance operational). I imagine I will be able to run 87 once things are all settled in.

It idles dead smooth, and pulls like a freight train from the basement to about 3000 RPM, right where I want it. It rarely sees anything more than that as the GT is my runaround daily driver. I didn't want to build anything more. The goal was to build a mild, low RPM torque engine for daily duties on pump gas with the A/C on. Also, I wanted to keep it as accurate as I could to a correct 1972 455 factory build. I think I've hit exactly what I was aiming at.

Anyway, hope my swap and fun day encourages others to keep after their projects too. Sure is satisfying to enjoy the fruits of your 'Pontiac' labors!

Just thought I'd share the update, and attach a few before/after pics for you guys.

Enjoy!

Well, it's been another fun 500 miles in 5 days, and I think the 455 is settled in nicely. She's idle's smooth, purrs going down the highway, and runs dead on the thermostat in cruise.

Time for another oil change, then back to daily duties for the GT.

Next project will be the air conditioning system overhaul, and last will be paint & body. I will keep the Monarch Yellow.

Today is a bittersweet day. After six wonderful years of ownership, the 72 LeMans GT is headed to its new home.

Since I bought my 71 GTO hardtop last month, I decided I needed to let one of my others go due to space (and time) constraints. Fortunately, my brother expressed interest in GT, so this weekend, he came out from Missouri, and we loaded her up. He's now on his way back home with a treasure!

The years with the car have provided many joys and adventures, and I was able to spend this summer enjoying the new 455 as well. I put about 4000 miles on the since install this Spring, and that made for a wonderful summer! The GT sure has been a sweetheart in my fleet, but I know she's going to the right home. My brother has a great track record of caring for vintage Pontiac's, and he currently has my old 74 Bonneville in his care as well. Now, the GT will live alongside Bonne and they will continue the adventures!

As for me, my attention now turns primarily to my 71 GTO hardtop. Last week, she flew thru emissions, and I got the registration and insurance squared away. Now begins many years/miles/smiles & projects to come! I will continue to update that thread as things progress.

Well Gents, she's baaaaack!

Earlier this week, I flew out to Missouri to retrieve the GT from my brother's care. He realized he was spread a little too thin with all of his toys, and decided something needed to give. I told him I'd take the GT back, so here we are!

In two days, she did 1330 miles, pulling a U-Haul trailer loaded with the original 350 and associated spare parts. All that stuff wasn't going to fit in the trunk.

I had to cannonball the adventure as things demanded my attention back at home sooner than later, so I was in the car for 36 hours, with a 3 hour nap along the way. Of course with the factory tank, it meant I had to stop about every 150 miles or so, which took up some time. Nevertheless, what another fun road trip adventure! Man, I just can't get enough of these.

I hit some pretty severe Thunderstorm's in Oklahoma overnight Tuesday, so much so that with wipers and lights on high, hazards on, and 20mph, I could only see one stripe in front of me. That was exciting.

Other than that, there was only one mechanical delay. As the miles wore on, I could tell she was developing a bit of a miss, and just wasn't running quite right. I thought I'd wait until I got home to take a look at things, but when I exited for my last fuel stop an hour and a half north of Phoenix, she wouldn't have any of it. She could barely get out of her own way pulling away from a stop. I spotted an O'Reilly's down the block, and pulled in. Pretty quickly, I realized the point gap had gone to nearly zero, and I had to wonder, how was she even running?! There wasn't enough adjustment left in the screw, but I walked out of the store 5 min later with a new set of points in hand. With a matchbook cover from a kind stranger, I had the new ones installed and set in a few minutes. She fired right up, and once again purred happily. I was actually thankful it happened when it did as I had to pull the 5 mile uphill grade out of Camp Verde heading south right after that. That would have been no fun without good spark.

Needless to say, another wonderful adventure for me with a vintage Pontiac, but now my dilemma begins. Do I keep the GT and finish the body/paint, or do I put the original 350 back in, keep my 455, and let her go to a new home as is? After 6 years of prior ownership and realizing how much of 'me' there is in this girl, it's awfully hard to think of letting her go to someone outside of the family.

Give me your thoughts. Which way would you go, and why? Boy, I sure love these first world problems.

I've attached a couple pics of the adventure. When was the last time you saw a 72 LeMans pulling a U-Haul?

Todd,1970-71 GT-37's and 1972-1975 Lemans GT's are super cool very unique Pontiac's.

Pleased to hear you have your GT back, keep this thread updated.

Todd, I forgot to say that pulling the U-Haul trailer pics are amazing...leave the hitch on. It makes me want to do the Route 66! However, no trailer hitches on any of them anymore except the '71 Bonneville, but you were hauling the original engine back home. They come in handy if you need to haul a smaller load like that. Great adventure story and glad you had only minor problems...which only add to the adventure.

Thanks Dennis (and Rich). Yes, it was a fun adventure for sure, and yes, the GT's are cool in their own way. I'm quite pleased to have her back!

I bought the hitch from someone here on the boards (can't recall who at the moment). It's actually a 68 hitch, so I had to 'custom fit' it somewhat. It sits a bit tight to the fuel door, which can make fueling interesting. My eyes are open for a 70-72 hitch to see if there's any difference. I imagine they're a bit longer.

I'm seriously considering doing the body and paint work and a couple misc details to finish her up. I've already done 90% of the mechanicals. Hate to stop now! Besides, I know how sharp she would look with a fresh coat of Monarch Yellow.

I've been away from the boards for a few weeks, but thought I'd share another fun little road trip I took with the GT a couple weeks back. I decided I needed a little Pontiac time, and with a 2 day window, I decided it was time to explore some backroads of the desert.

I headed west out of Phoenix on Hwy 60, out thru the CA desert on Hwy 62, and landed outside Palm Springs the evening of Dec 30th. On the 31st, I ran north out of 29 Palms, across Interstate 40 to Needles, then down Hwy 95 back to Parker AZ and home just in time to ring in 2021.

Sometimes, you just can't get enough time behind the wheel of a classic Pontiac, right? One of these days I will get back to the bodywork on the GT, but I have to tear myself away from driving it all the time.

I've posted a couple pics for your enjoyment.

My former 400 4 speed GT convertible apparently has had quite the misfortune after my care:

https://bid.cars/en/lot/1-46297110/1...-2D67T2P165208

VIN for posterity 2D67T2P165208

Shame since this was a good running, original numbers car when I sold it in 2009. Looks like it had an engine swap, and the addition of a center console. The factory 14" Honeycombs are gone too.

Shame the car has been through hell.

Did you have a PHS on it?

No. The guys that bought it from me purchased a PHS on it, and verified that was was a 400/4 speed GT Convertible purchased locally to me. When I sold it it had just over 100k on the odometer. It had some decent options, such as dash tach/rally gauges, power trunk, honeycombs, and A/C.

Looks like you had a very nice road trip.
