Smile 1974 Pontiac GTO shaker hood scoop - Need advice.

Dear All,

I need some advice on my 1974 GTO that I have purchased recently. The previous owner replaced the 350 engine with a 400CI engine hence after this conversion he directly installed (bolted) the shaker hood to the hood. Is there a way to reinstall its functionality on the engine & carburetor, keeping the same stance of the formal glory of the GTO when opening the hood the shaker scoop stays on the engine. Am I missing any parts or brackets ?

thanks in advance for the help.

You'll need the original air cleaner to secure the shaker to. You'll also have to make sure the manifold that's on the car now isn't taller than the original one otherwise you may have clearance issues between the shaker and the hood.
That looks like a torker1 intake in your picture and I'm not sure how much taller they are over a stock intake.

I want to say that a torker 1 intake will put the carburetor too far back. I tried to run one on a '78 Trans Am and it would not work with the hood scoop.

They are also pitched forward or raised in the back (however you look at it) also. Forgot they are also moved back a touch.
If you really want to keep the shaker separate from the hood, your probably going to need to fabricate a carb base or modify an existing one.

Rob B,

Thanks for your feedback. I will find a way to attach the scoop to the bottom of the hood, to keep the stance of the 1974 GTO.

BDW your profile GTO pic looks like mine

I just made aluminum tabs that secure the shaker to the hood on both mine and my wife's 74. On my car, I actually used a stock ventura hood and cut the correct hole out and saved my other hoods. There is better support in the center of a regular hood over a GTO shaker hood. The hood on my wife's flexes more because of the lack of support over mine and outside of not having the small qtr inch lip, you'd never know the difference. If I ever need mine to be "correct" I can just put my other hood back on. This winter I'll probably switch to a fiberglass one anyway.

The Torker does move the final carb location, but in most cases it still works. Mabye without the main seal.

Otherwise being a 350 or a 400 makes zero difference in height.

Holley's and Torker do.

I was able to use a Holley Street Dominator intake on my '74 GTO and still use the shaker scoop/seal. On my Trans Am, the torker 1 moved the carb back and I was not able to close my hood without interference between the back of the scoop and opening in the hood for the scoop. I replaced the torker 1 with a Holley Street Dominator intake and able to close my hood again.

I have a '71 455 HO manifold on mine, but had to lower the shaker.

Jon.

I was just barely able to use a Torker with Qjet on my 78 TA once upon a time, very close on the rear and took the seal off.

I am running a 750 carter afb on my Trans Am. Maybe it sit the shaker back a little further? The car currently has the afb and a street dominator intake with seal removed. Nice car Steve!

John it was one fast ass TA.

I put milled 12 heads on it, Royal Bobcat head gasket set left over from our dealership, Torker, with stock cam and Qjet. It was one of the fastest cars I ever put together with so little effort.
