The plate I have designed has a bearing, with races, on both sides of the plate.
Reason?? As I have stated that I race circle track. I can be on and off the throttle 600 times in 1 race. Thought that this would really help with the wear of the cam plate. Have also junked a few cams too due to face wear as well as having wear on the plate itself

It is easy to ASSUME that this plate is designed like the chevys, but I assure you that its not.

EXCELLENT WORK!

That will be a great piece for us. Sorry for the extra questions.

That is nice work! A little insurance goes a long way when it comes to an expensive motor--heck, even on an inexpensive motor! The idea makes complete sense to me too--I pulled apart a 400 I am having rebuilt the other day, and noticed significant wear on the plate.

It looks like very good work to me, you designed it for your circle track race car, (on and off the throttle) then it should work very well in a street engine as well (on and off the throttle). Will you be selling these yourself or thru some of the Pontiac vendors? Thanks for the nice work, i will be looking into buying one soon.

I don't see a down side to it's use. Good concept and design.

Dammit!! I wish I would have know about this before I built my 400. Its only got about 200 miles on it, so I dont want to take it apart yet. Well, if I do open it up, I defiantely will get one of these. I have built several Pontiac engines, and have seen dramatic wear on a couple of the factory cam plates. So im sure this will help. And everyone, (ALMOST EVERYONE) is right. As much as our Pontiacs cost to rebuild, its just a little bit of insurance.

Jim,

You can send Scott the gear and he can machine it to work.

I would be glad to machine a gear that you already have! As long as it is a billet steel piece, there should be no problems. I would worry about some "cast" gears during the machining process. Have not had very good results with these.
Send me your gear, and I'll modify your gear for my set up for $150 plus shipping back to you.
Thats your gear and my plate,bearings/races,bolts and alignment tool for that price.

I hope that sounds fair!

Thanks for all the great responses!

Scott

I just ordered a timing set from Scott with the .006" shorter chain. Scott also has some other very good ideas on other parts he may make for the Pontiac engine. Stay tuned...

We were cleaning up the shop the other day and found a severly damaged stock retainer plate. The plate was removed from a rebuilt (according to previous owner) '68 400. Here is my first attempt at posting a picture...

Ok, i just received my timing set from Scott and i must say his work is second to none and i can't wait to try it out. As you know the Rollmaster chain will last for a very long time so for the price of this timing set it is well worth the money. Scott has also made a billet oil pump driveshaft. The shaft is made from pre-heat treated 4140 steel called Accruloy from Baldwin Steel and is the toughest steel he has ever machined. This steel is almost twice as strong as standard 4140 steel due to the forging process. Scott sent me a pic of the shaft and at this time it's the same size as stock and he can easily remove up to .125" off the shaft for more clearance with the counterweight on the Eagle crankshaft. He is building a 455" with the Eagle crank at this time and he will see how much he has to remove from the shaft for good clearance and will machine them for the Eagle crank or the standard size if you use a stock crank. I like new parts and i am willing to try anything new that i can afford and i am very happy with this timing set. Thanks again Scott for the EXCELLENT work and let me know when the pump shafts are ready as i want a couple of them.
