I just received my timing set from Scott (Sims Performance Machining). The workmanship looks great, it was very well packaged, and the communication from Scott was excellent. Please keep up the good work and let us know when you come up with some other innovations!

I have Jeff Kauffmans dyno rented for Feb. 27th. I am piggy backing on a friends build. The plan is to get it set up, make some pulls. Stop and switch to my setup, make a few pulls and check the difference, if any. All I can do is hope for a few horsepower. I originally didn't make this plate for a horsepower but for wear and a reduction of parasitic drag. I do hope though it gains a few horsepower during the test

thanks...

Scott

Well I hate to say this...I have to delay the dyno test 1 more week. I hate waiting! But to drive 5 hrs to do this test...I want everything to be ready and not be rushed and forget something. I called KRE to reschedule. Jeff is one nice guy. And very understanding too!

Well I hate to say this...AGAIN!!!..I have to delay the dyno test 1 more week. My friend (his engine is to be used for the test) had something come up at work that he needed to tend to. He/We decided that to take the day off to go to the dyno would be a BAD career move on his part. We'll get there....

Sorry for all the delays

Scott

Tom, Check is fine!
Thanks for the business...
Scott

I just got back from the Dyno. I had the opportunity to test the roller bearing cam plate. We dyno tested @ Williams Precision Engines in St. Paul Indiana. Here is the final results and I'll give the details tomorrow....

2 pulls back to back with a new stock retainer.
torque....457.58 avg.
HP...434.20 avg.

2 pulls back to back with my roller bearing cam plate....
torque....467.05 avg.
HP...443.01 avg.

There was nothing else changed but the cam retaining plate!

Oh...I have pictures of major scuffing of the new stock plate

I am happy

Scott,
That sounds very promising! Looking forward to getting my motor in and running soon, w/Sims Performance thrust bearing retainer plate already installed.

Thanks again,
Herb

simsb52:

The cam thrust plate set up looks to be of excellent quality. I should get one for my SD rebuild.

Question: The horsepower and torque seem to be low for the combination you're running, especially the torque. I would have figured at least 500 lb.ft. for that combo. Any input that you can give regarding the actual numbers?

The torque #'s I gave was the average of the 2 pulls. Peak torque was 520 ft/lbs with the roller bearing cam plate. I think Mr. Mahon is going to have to find a good cheap source on tires if he unleashes on a regular basis.

Simsb52 is top notch and helped out greatly with this engine test. Without his help, i am sure I would not have got anywhere near the testing completed that I did.

With that said, all did not go smooth. I was fighting carb and HEI issues for the majority of the day. I'd also like to thank Roger Williams and the group he has over in St.Paul Indiana. We overcame alot of obsticals in a rather short amount of time in the afternoon.

I'd also like to thank Jim and Tom Hand; along with countless others from the Pontiac community (most who help out with this board) that have given good, strong, and helpful advice over the past several years.

The only correction I'd like to make about the build-up hardware listed earlier for my engine is the co-rods. There are infact 6.8" Crowers. I don't think it makes a bit of difference in how the dyno numbers came out, but the rods are not Eagles.

Also, the average numbers that are listed are average from 4500 to 5500 rpm; those are not average peak numbers.

There was a lot more hardware changes I wanted to test (three different intakes and 2 different camshafts; and follow up with a couple changes to the shaker scoop set-up); but after fighting the carbs (should have just put on Cliff Ruggles carb from the git-go and saved a couple hours of tail chacing) and then playing 'scramble the HEIs' We ran out of time.

I do want to point out that the Roller Bearing Cam Retainer Plate was a undeniable improvement over the stock thrust plate for my engine. I will be buy and installing them on all my other Pontiac V8 engines in the future. I could not be more pleased with the results (in both power and wear reduction). I'd recommend them to everyone who runs a steel camshaft, period. I'd also recomend them to anyone plans to rev up their Pontiacs above 4500 rpm on a regular basis. That stock thrust plate was just plane worn badly in the very short amount of time it was run on the dyno. This this started out band new! I would not have put it back in on any engine, period.

Lastly, I'd like to thank Cliff Ruggles. Without his Q-Jet, the day would have been a complete waste. I'd recommend him to anybody with a Q-jet. Now all I need to do is get in contact with Sun Tuned and talk to him about Pontiac HEIs....

Jeff

I just installed Scott's kit on my SD-455 motor last night and everything worked out great. Scott had it machined for .007 camshaft endplay and I measured it at .0065. The kit is made up of top notch components and comes with a simple yet detailed instruction sheet. The one installation step that I did not use was the use of Lubriplate 104 to hold the bearings and races together while assembling onto the motor. I substituted Comp Cams assembly lube which has the consistency of cold honey in winter. It worked great for me. Great stuff Scott! Keep thinking of ways to make our Pontiacs better and more reliable.
