Default ignition switch

I have a 2002 firebird convert, I am replacing the ignition switch. When I try to slid the cable into the end of the switch it pushes the other end of the mount off its bent tang, am I suppose to remove the 2 screws, insert the cable and remount it on the switch? Also when the bracket is mounted on the switch and the cable pushed into it the bracket, the cable sticks out past the plastic that's on the cable, on the original switch they were flush. It is acting like the button inside the bracket is not depressing to let the clip slide up to support the cable end. I have exchanged the part once and want to know what I am doing wrong. It is an electrical part, can only get replacements, no refund.
