In what car is this? Newer cars have a internal switch like a rolling ball bearing that make the light come on, and older ones like one for a 70 have a switch on it that rides on the trunk hinge.

65 GTO, shows no switch in the wiring diagram and no place to hook one up. I say's it somehow works off the dome light, but that makes no sense to me...,,

I'll guess, because your drivers door is still hanging by a thread. The switch is still in the closed postion.

Can you physically trace the power wire back to the source with a test lite? This will probably be the only way to trace the problem.

Stupid question. Could you have put it in backwards where it is coming on when closed and off when open or is that even possible?

Bob, the hot wire is in a loop with the dome lamp wiring, and even when the dome light is off (when I put the HANGING DOOR back on), the trunk light still stay's on.

I removed the back seat cushion and the light stiil shines bright.....

I thought the door jam switch merely cut the ground not the ac to the dome light. If I am correct then having the light screwed to the trunk is giving it a ground. I could be wrong as I have been before. I thought those lites had like a slider switch on the inside that turned it off and on?

Bob, the libht must have two wires if your theory is correct. At some point in time the hot and ground must meet. The unit is grounded to the trunk which is grounded to the chassis, so somewhere in time the 12v must be switched... But where?

Yep sounds like I am wrong. Hope you get yours figured out before I want to put mine in. You could save me a whole lot of time and grief. Sometimes (N :Not Always) I like going second.

It could be staying on because the wire is pinched. that can cause a light to remain on.
Also check your switches for corrosion. Is this light attached to the lid? If it is try a new bulb the old bulb can be defective.in the mercury as it acts as the switch .

Kate, all wiring is new, including the bulb and the fixture for it. It is working, but will not go off. The ground is good, the bulb is good, the wiring is all new from underhood to trunk and taillights.....

my 72 has a single hot wire and is a attached to trunk lid the hinge(drivers side) and gets ground from the hinge with a spring loaded switch arm when the lid is up the arm is open and supplies the ground.
Does your lamp have one wire or two? either way it should have a switch mechanism to turn on and off when the lid is opened.

Jo, it only has one wire, so I am thinking it is missing a switch, but why would the schematic not show one?

The bulb holder itself has the spring loaded swith assy.

I don't think it's clear enough to get a good look at it, but here is one view..

Well no pics can't upload to this forum.

I was right only one wire (hot) goes to lamp assembly, with the lid up the arm sticks out and touches nothing allowing frame ground to be applied to the lamp body via a brass conductor.

lid down the connection is broken. real simple on the 72 not sure of the 65 version.

Mine has an arm but it is a crude switch at best, the arm just moves the contactor away from the bulb body like a switch.

May be the arm is off of yours, I can slide the arm out of my assembly real easy.

Check with Ccass and see if he has the assembly Nos.
