I'm converting to Pertronix and want to remove the resistance which the points set up had from the factory. I believe it reduced it to 9 volts with the old points. How do I accomplish this?

You could use this wire to trigger a relay to get your full 12 volts to the new coil,or you could run a new wire from the ignition switch where the resisitor wire is now and run it out the firewall somewhere, it helps to pull a non reisited wire from another spare harness that has the correct end to snap into the original ingnition plug which is what I did for my HEI.

I suggest you check the installation instructions for your Pertronix unit to MAKE SURE that it would be ok without a resistance wire.

Regards, George

Well, actually it said it wasn't necessary to remove the wire, but I figured I'd get a better spark without. I'm not sure of my logic obviously.

Removing the resistor wire will probably increase your coil current. The output transistor in the Pertronix module must be able to switch the increased current, which may affect it's reliability. I would stay with their recommendations; they have designed and tested their stuff accordingly.

I installed a pertronix in my 70 per the instructions, two years trouble free so far. KNOCK ON WOOD

Norwood, I take it you left the resistor wire in place. Does it start easier and idle smoother than with the points?

Oh, and Norwood, is your T/A Lucerne or Polar? Just curious.

I'll second Norwood's opinion - mine's been in for a few years (approx 25K miles) with no hassle, and had a noticeable improvement in performance over the points without killing the resistor.

I,ve had mine in for a year and a half now. No problems at all. You must take an ohm meter and test the coil as they tell you in the instructions or you will fry the unit. As for mine, I left the original point wire, taped it off, and ran a new AWG10 wite from fusebox (IGN ter. check on your car, should only be hot with key on) I have an Accel supercoil that had the incorrect resistance. I had to add a balast resistor of 1 ohm (i thinh, i'ts been a while) You can use a Mopar one or go to Radio Shack and get one if you need it. They have the rating stamped in the side of the resistor. This is for Pertronix 1, I do'nt know if this pertains to Pertronix ll. They may of updated and you do'nt need to do this. Pertronix 1 is about $70.00, 11 is about $150.00 Good Luck!

I just installed a Pertronix LS (Lobe Sensor) unit. It works well except I must wait about 5 seconds for the coil to saturate each time I try to start. Apparently, Pertronix has a different version (non LS) which does not have this delay.

If there is an "LS" in the part number on the box, you have the Lobe Sensor version.
