Duane, Im thinking 6500 rpm would be more effective.
Would sure want that SD but not enough $ - had my 74 SD at 6000 rpm a few times but it did have the HO Racing blocked oil bypass -rhoads lifters - also there hottest street cam at the time -around 540 lift..

I've been to a few other shows and events but this is the first T/A nats I will have attended, so i'm buzzing already.....can't wait!! Just wish I was able to drive into the event in one of my cars!

By the way, those restorations look awesome....

I'll be at the nats with my AB 74. its a work in progress. finished the mechanicals and plan on doing some minor interior touches before the show. in a sea of restored cars, it shouldn't be too hard to spot.

What does a set of NOS SD rods go for these days? Are these as good as the aftermarkets that are available. I'm just about to start rebuilding my original 455(250HP) and I'm looking to buy parts. I am going to have SD heads on my motor and expect the HP to be 450+, it is also going to have a roller cam. Thanks

They are expensive depending on what batch they came from. Not worth the money when there are Eagles, PPR, etc. available much cheaper. They are just as strong, less expensive, and readily available. If you were restoring an SD engine that would be one thing. Plus, you are not making dangerous HP that requires a killer rod.

what is the rim width for SD cars if there is a difference? wondering if 255/60 tires will look goofy on the 74. I also dont want to modify the fender. I had to modify the inner fender lip on my 79 w/ 8" snowflakes when I installed the 255/60 tires. I may stay with the 235/70 tires that are on the car.

No difference. 15x8. I'm running 255/60s on all corners. Slight, but hardly noticeable rubbing up front.

the 79 rubs on the inner fender when the suspension compresses. the car sits lower than stock which does not help that issue, but it looks cool.

I've seen Ralleys 15x9 before due to customizing them for large tires. Looked great and they road smooth as silk!

I've also been running 255/60 15's Radial T/A's on 15x7 Rally II's and/or Honeycombs on my '72 Trans Am for some time and I haven't experienced any rubbing at all. I should note that I did replace the rear springs when I got the car and shocks have been replaced since then also.

Hi all. Newbie here to the Forum. I've been reading and watching from the sidelines for a while and decided to join in the fun.

I run ancient Goodyear 255-60 Gatorbacks on my TA with the original Honeycombs without any rubbing issues. I won the tires back in 1991 at one of the earlier pure stock drags when Chuck Green was organizing it, so I ordered the most expensive tire from Goodyear at the time. I probably only have 500 miles on them to date.

A little about myself, yes, I'm Dan Jensen's twin brother, whom you all seem to know. My TA is a Brewster Green 4-speed car my wife and I bought from the third owner 20 years ago. It has 45k miles and I haven't done anything drastic to it in all that time, until now. Dan and I have removed the engine to check it out and the report is good. Still nice inside without any problems. The third owner, who Dan & I know well, rebuilt it in 1982 and punched it 0.030" over with SD pistons, had to replace the crank due to a spun bearing by the second owner (then a 17 year old kid), and installed Rhodes lifters with the original Y cam. We are going to leave it that way for now since we are going to bring it to the TA Nats in a couple of weeks. Actually, the main reason for taking the engine out was to replace teh warped and cracked original exhaust manifolds that leaked so bad it sounded like a model T or early John Deere. We are installing new repro manifolds from Ram Air Resorations alnog with a complete Pypes exhaust system to replace the old H-O Crossfire system.

I look forward to seeing/meeting many of you in Dayton!

Dennis

Dennis:

You and I have met many years ago. I used to come to Mid Michigan with Rick Swain and Ken Bernardi back in the early 80's. We used to crash on Scott's floor when he still had the mobile home on the lot.

As a matter of fact, I rode in your Cardinal Red 70 GTO from Scott's place up to the track one day. Of course we see Dan and Scott all the time at the different events. Look forward to reaccquainting with you. I own an Admiralty Blue 74 SD 4 speed car now.

Default Details on my SD

Our SD is a former street brawler that was driven very hard. One neat story from the 3rd owner was the time he beat the "unbeatable" Buick Brothers (in a street race in Kalamazoo) killer '70 Stage 1 GS. That was quite a feat at that time as the Buick was the car to beat and very well known in the stree scene back in 1980. At the time it was running an H-O HL-744 SD cam, headers, American A-200 aluminum mag wheels (which we still have), and the H-O Crossfire muffler replacing the original muffler (long gone).
It was raced at US -131 raceway once and turned a high 13.8 at 108 mph spinning through 1st & 2nd gears. Not bad back in '80, but we can get pure stock SD's to run high 12's @ 108 mph today without a lot of effort.

More to come later!
