Most likely, this XH is a 1977 400/180hp, which would have had the small crank hub, meaning no harmonic balancer, and the plastic timing pointer.

Other possible XH 400's are from 1970 and 1973.

The block casting number of 500557 and the cast date codes should clear this up.

Maybe checking to see what the casting date of the block would be helpful in figuring out what the engine is from. The last XH 400 looks to be 1977 from what I have seen.

The Following User Says Thank You to Mr. G For This Useful Post:

Thank you, we’re going to try and find that out this weekend.

Besides the block casting number, look at the diameter of the damper behind the crank pulley.
Many many of the small hub low perf type '75-77 dampers have been replaced with normal '68-79 design dampers.
In pulling specialty core parts, I have always removed & pitched the small hub type dampers & matching tabs, then removed the no tab type timing covers, oil pans, '73+ valley covers & ALL factory hardware. In repurposing the no tab timing covers on 400 & 455 engines, we then used the later style plastic timing tab which by design has the timing indicator marks further outboard. It works perfectly with the '68-79 style damper (original, Pioneer, etc). If original small hub type damper is present, you'll need the early style bolt on tab.

This is the correct casting number, so it is a 9790071. This is a FAR better block in both nickel content and basic design over the 1976-78 500557. Betting it is a 1969 XH. 1970 XH casting number is 9799914.

This is where the date code is. Back of the block to the right of the distributor if looking at the block from the front of the car.

A few pics, since everything is still in the car it’s very hard to get in there to read the numbers.

That number is the only one he can see, with everything in the engine compartment. This looks funny as hell but here he was just to see that number lolol.. There’s no wiggle room!

So what date is that? We don’t know how to de code it? Ok Mike just looked and ours is different there’s no date code or any numbers on that side it’s shaped different on ours.

Here is another picture where timing pointer should be? Previous owner pulled everything off and put all this chrome crap on it.

Feb 19, 1969 cast XH block. Most common '69 GP 400 block code. Heads originally would be "62"s, ck the raised number codes on the center exhaust ports, could easily be other pre '72 casting heads.

With the '69 model cast block, ot will only have two mounting bosses on each side, & there are going to be the goofy engine mount adapters or possibly prev owner welded '64-72 Pont V8 A-body frame brackets to the subframe & Abody rubber mounta are being used, seen the latter many times. Timing tab needs to be the later plastic style.

Yeah, I was wondering how the mount situation was with a 69 block....

MA, is the engine going to have a coming out party?

What heads are on it?

How original do you want your car to be?

This poor car is what I’d call...... a MUTT. Everything is different under the hood. To answer your question, it has 6X heads on it. I’m getting severe anxiety from this one, and we just started on it. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr all this stress to try and get one little part right....a timing pointer. scheesh .
