67 Sprint ID
I just picked up what I believe is a 67 Firebird Sprint engine. I really don't know much about these engines. Are there some casting numbers, codes, and date number markings on these similar to the V8 engines? I just picked it up I haven't had time to scrape off the grime and look for any numbers. Where are these numbers located? Thanks

for #s look at Jeff's "checking his list" post.
The block # is forward of the filler tube (right of the filler tube in your pic) Head number is stamped inside the top of the head. You have to remove the cam housing to see it, but you don't want to remove the cam housing w/o lining up the timing marks. Looks like non-sprint (1bbl) so the block # will tell you most of what you need to know |

Thanks for the info. The engine is a 4 bbl engine, or at least the intake is. To bad the carb is crusty. |

Ah, then it's most likely a sprint. The HB, head and fuel pump different on a sprint - can't recall what else off the top of my head. I think Jeff has most of those #s in his post

In looking at that harmonic balancer, I believe that its a 68 or 69, but definitely a factory Sprint motor. The 68 and later had a larger HB. I believe that when you see the block number the last four digits will be 0043.
Nice find. Are you going to rebuild it? |

Thanks. Not sure what my plans are. The engine is currently tight from not being properly stored, I kinda rescued it from the scraper. I don't have a need for it, but always thought these engines were interesting and unique. I'll see if I can free it up, but I have a feeling I'll sell it whole or for parts. We'll see. I also have the flywheel for it. |

Just from the pics, my eyes see 1968 Sprint, likely auto trans.

I also see a 68 sprint FB engine from the pictures, throttle cable means its a 68/69 as 67 Firebirds used a throttle shaft like Chevy's of the era, they are the only OHC-6's that use a shaft, all Tempest and Leman's use the cable.
One piece Large HB also indicates a 68/69 engine. As does the Carb style, and the exhaust heat baffles for the carb heat system is a 68/69 part. The Timing belt cover is the 67/68 style, the Dist Vacuum advance unit is the 68 only style with a vacuum port for advance & retard, Motor mounts & plates are definatly F-body. I would say from just the parts I agree with 1967SharkOHC that it is a 68 FB Sprint motor. But I think I see a broken Manual Trans Z bar ball stud in the block, hard to tell for sure but I suspect it is a 68 manual trans engine. Not that it really matters but I have seen the Large Harmonic Balancer on more Manual trans sprints than Automatic sprints, but I have seen them on a few Auto's also.

Thanks for the info gentleman. I'm hoping I'll have some time this coming weekend to look for the engine codes.

Someone correct me if wrong but wasn't '69 the only year for the Heat Shield on the Exhaust pipe?

Hey Jeff, Just so happens I was at a car show today and another 68 Sprint pulled in. It was a LaMans and unmolested. I took the picture cause I remembered reading your question. It's attached ( I hope )

I found the casting numbers and date code. But is there a stamped code similar to the V8's? Date looks like J067

The stamping should be on the side by the oil fill tube. It is on the surface right next to the tube that faces up. At the bottom of the head. ( just below spark plug ) A lot of times this number is missing due to resurfacing of the top of the engine during rebuild . You may be able to see it if you remove the crud & paint in this area.

I'm looking for the engine code, can someone give me a specific spot to look for the code? The engine is up against a wall on that side and its a little dark in the storage unit. Maybe circle the spot in red or something? That info would be much appreciated.

Your first picture shows the area ( covered in grease ) just behind the oil fill, below the sparkplug, facing up ( to the sky) . The breather tube to the carb is in the way & should be removed ( for a better view of the numbers. )Remove the grease & you may find the number code here. It is stamped into the engine. Would circle the spot but that is beyond my abilities See "lets build a sprint" LOL
