So I'm sitting here in the Vet's office with Gradie...
Gradie, Sandra's rescue dog has a liver infection he may not beat. We came in two weeks ago because he was lethargic and not eating. His white blood cel count was high so they gave us some antibiotics and sent us on our way. We were on vacation last week and although he was up for doing just about everything, he stopped eating half way through, and wouldn't take his meds no matter what we put them in.
Got back on Sunday & were in the vet's office Monday first thing. More blood work, white cells higher, & bilirubin had tripled. IV with antibiotics, other meds to stem the nausea (he was throwing up anything, even water). Back again yesterday, more IV's, x-rays & ultrasound to rule out cancer. Here again today for another 6 hour IV & they're letting me camp out in the break room with him. Turns out he has a (genetic maybe) liver issue that's been undiagnosed and they believe he's caught a bacterial hepatitis infection that's kicking his ass. If we can flush out the liver & get him back to a normal state, he should be fine - the next few days will determine that. His breathing was really forced last night so I was on the couch next to him - hopefully he'll be better after today's round. Say a prayer for the little guy if you have a chance - I hope I'm not digging any holes this weekend. Thanks.

Thanks guys - you're great!
Back here at 7:00 this morning & going to be a marathon day (10+ hours) as they try to pump in fluids & B-Vitamins to help the liver recover. Had another x-ray yesterday and they aren't seeing any bloating/fluid in his abdomen however the protein that keeps the liver from leaching is very low so we're watching for that. He did eat about a third of a can of dog food last night (a special one they sent home with me), took his meds and drank lots without throwing up at all - Tuesday night he wouldn't eat and threw up all the water he drank on himself in bed. This morning he had another 1/3 of the can and had some chicken/rice that we put in with it, but didn't finish all of that. We've been burying the meds in a spoon full of the canned food & he's taking those - so that's good! By the time I get out of here tomorrow I will have spent over 35 hours here this week which will be more than I've spent in my own job in over two years! LOL I know this is wearing on him, there are other things he's seeing/hearing that are unsettling as well but the people here are treat him/us very well so under the circumstances it's more than we can expect. Tomorrow may be the last day here but I've blocked off Saturday and have cleared the early part of next week as well. It could be worse, hopefully he continues and gets better. Thanks again!
