I put a brand new headlight switch in, but the dome light and courtesy lamps don't go out when the doors are closed. This just started recently. I've been doing alot to the dash of this car(79 TA), could I have pulled something loose?

The dome and courtesy lights are turned on by rotating the headlight switch CCW. Rotating the switch to the right should turn them off unless there is a problem with the new switch.

This problem occurs with both the new and old switch. It has to be somewhere else in the circuit. Maybe I have a bad door pin?

Manually test each door switch, the one that fails to turn the lights off needs replacing.

The door switches only ground the circuit to the body. If you pinched a wire somewhere that would do it. Try tracing the door switch wires back to the harness they are comming from. There is a 70 GTO wiring diagram on page 2 of this forum. It might give you ideas of what and where to look. Sounds like something simple.

I have this problem on my 70 GTO convertible on the front courtesy lights. Afer not driving the car for about two weeks I tried to start it and the battery was dead. After replacing the battery I noticed that the front courtesy lights were on when the doors were shut. I replaced the headlight switch with no success. I am guessing that it is some type of grounding issue. The car is in storage now but I plan on getting to the heart of this matter sometime this spring.
If you come up with anything please let me know.

I is a grounding issue. Could be a switch or any connection. I had the same problem on my 79 TA. If you need a temporary resolution you can pull the dome light bulb which will prevent the other lights from turning on.

Try removing the door jamb switches one at a time if the lights go off when the switch is unscrewed and not touching the body than that switch is bad. If the switches test good than you must have a short to ground on one of the courtesy light circuits.

Sounds more like a door jamb swithch problem. That's the first p;ace I would check. Believe it or not, sometimes a simple lubrication to the switch will fix the problem. Second place I would look are the curtesy fixtures themselves, checking for shorts. After that, start tracing. These problems are usually simple in nature, but can be a pain in the @$$ at times. Hope this helps.

Have'nt had much time lately to get to it, so I pulled the bulbs. Next weekend I should have plenty of time to get the bottom of this. Thanks.

Here's a strange twist. I noticed my cigarette lighter was unhooked on my 70 gto convertible. I plugged the wire in and my interior lights stayed on at all times. The lighter did not work. Unplugged the cigarette lighter and they work fine. Guess I won't start smoking.
