The original price sheet from my '62 lists
77Y 4BBL-TEMPESTORQUE $211.54($38.74 for the 4BBl, $172.80 the automatic) I am assumeing that this is the 140HP engine. Is this a better cam also? CR 10.25?? Any problems with unleaded fuel? The car runs on. How's this for a newbie question? Thanks: Fred A |

The 77Y is 166HP,215 lb ft torque, 4 bbl carb, automatic trans. 10.25 cr is a little high for todays fuels. I put an electric idle solenoid on mine to controll idle & backed off on the carb idle screw so when I turn off the key, the throttle closes all the way off. Does not run on any more. May want to leave it in gear when you shut it off, this also helps. Cam is the 099, biggest made for the Tempest from the factory.

Keith has some good suggestions. You might also check to make sure that your timing is right at 6 degrees BTDC and your idle speed is set right. Also make sure that there is no carbon buildup in the chambers. A good way to eliminate it is to slowly pour a couple glasses of water through the carb at about 2000 rpm. I had problems with preignition and running on this summer and this cured it.
