I'm sure you already know, but that was because of the hatches.

Pretty sure that the 400/4speed 50th anni. cars were rarer than the 50th 455/4speed cars - but they just don't bring the same money. The non-50th cars had the 455 cars more common than the 400/4speed cars - and they don't bring as much money either. I guess main knock on the 400 cars was the 557 block.

Still, I bet that 50th car is on the rare side.

Yeah I've been trying to do some research on the car. Would be neat to see how many were actually made. Gonna have to order the phs also. Anybody have any questions or interest in the car let me know.

It used to be broken down - this old site really had a lot on info on it and it is now gone:

http://www.76transam.com/techinfo/specs.htm

We all know they made over 30,000 400/auto cars - only 7100 or so 455/4speed cars. That site above "used to" have the breakdown of the 400/4speed cars - about 5400 of those. So for the non-LE cars, the 400/4speed was rarer than the 455/4speed. I am pretty sure than the LE's were never broken down into: 400/auto's vs 400/4speed. But, if you look at the non-LE cars breakdown, it would make sense that there are less 400/4speed cars for the LE as well.

My bud bought a 76 T/A in 1979. 455 4 spd. Yellow, black guts, ps, pb
it had no posi and must of had granny gears because it was a dog when
out of 1st gear. NO console either!
Bought from the original owner who kept it in a garage and didn't drive it
winters. He sold it for peanuts in 82. No idea whatever happend to that car.

it came with a limited slip rear, unless it was a factory mistake. should have had 3:23 gears also. yes in stock form, they leave you with alot to want performance wise, but that is a very easy fix and will then run very respectable.

Here is a good little read about the 76 TA - some have probably read it:

http://www.2gta.com/1976ta.html

Per the article - 76 TA was the third fastest american production car of the year. 360 Dodge dart first then the vette of that year followed by the TA.

Muscle Collector is correct though - that big motor was the best to hop-up. Look at this article. Nunzi tuned one without anything added - it went from 88mph and low 16's in the quarter to mid-15's and low 90's:

that got me thinking about it and this is what i found. i am really shocked that it shows you could order this package in 1976 without a catalytic converter. how could they get around this seeing that all passengers cars after 1975 were supposed to be equipped with converters????? here is the link to what i found.
