Default Need Oil Filter for a '65 LeMans with headers.

Getting everything together now. My car is a 4 speed, has Doug's headers and has a Lakewood bell housing.

The supplied oil filter will fit in it's spot, but we can't get it up there.

My choices are:

1. Find a narrower oil filter.
2. Set up remote oil filter.
3. Unbolt the oil filter housing and pull it out the top every time I do an oil change. (Been there, don't want to do that again.)

I like to keep things simple, so my preferred solution is #1. What do y'all think?

Best one right here. Been running these for about 4 years now. Nice to be able to inspect for particles and wash and go.

I have run into this multiple times on customer's cars that have D port Doug's headers and a 4 manual transmission. All the cars were using a factory bell housings though. What I have done is modifying the bell housing so that I can get a full size filter in there. I take a grinder and remove material till I can get it through the opening.

I have a 65 four speed with round port doug's headers and mcleod bell. I run the HP2006 filter because the nut on the bottom makes life way easier.

When I had previous header clearance issues I ran a System-1 210 series "Spin On" Billet oil filter similar to what Mike posted. I used to get badgered on occasions because it had only a 30 micron screen.

Possibly this might be of help:

We have always used the Wix 51045 for header applications that doesn't have any room for a standard sized filter.

Wix 51258

That's considered the 'regular' size filter and similar to the old Delco PF-24
He needs to evaluate it's dimensions.

Chris: I'm not sure which filter you're currently working with, but for reference if it helps, I have a Wix 51258 on the desk in front of me. It measures exactly 4-1/4" tall and 3-5/8" wide. Those are the real-life measurements, which vary slightly from the official published numbers. I'm hoping to use this filter in my '66 with Doug's d-port headers - although I have an automatic with stock TH400 bellhousing. Time will tell.

I agree, but good luck getting your hands on a pair of RA manifolds these days, though. They've been on backorder at RARE for over a year.

If you're referring to D-port RA manifolds, that was not my experience for my 66 A-body. I had an order in with RARE for a set of D-port manifolds for a very long time last year. Paul is/was unable to get LH manifold castings for D-ports, but he continued to tell me for many months that he was getting more in "next week". That never happened, so I had to bail on the order. I think there are a few other folks here who hit the same wall as me with getting D-port RA manifolds from RARE. Maybe the D-port RA manifolds sold by other companies are more readily available - no clue on that.

It's hard to tell by the angle of the picture in the first post, but what about trying the Firebird long branch filter adapter. It will tilt the filter to the 7-8 o clock position and may clear a larger filter.

Tom, I've never had a problem with an automatic equipped 64-67 A body with D port Doug headers, but manual transmission cars with the factory bell housings have been the issue. I have had to partially remove the passenger side starter "ear" on the bellhousing so I can get the filters in there. Surprisingly, round port headers for the same car don't have the issue. Only D port ones. Weird!

Agreed. I gave up calling them for an update even. Waste of time.

Brake Cleaner. Been running these on a few street cars and on my race car. Nice to be able to open it up so easily and inspect for debris.
