Default Can you keep a secret? ....sshhhhhhhhh....

I know its been brought up here before....you know, the good ole Rustoleum roller paint job. Well after redoing my hood scoop, the old Pontiac needed some paint.

I rolled on a paint job on my daily driver, a 67 Ford Econoline. ( http://www.ford-econoline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=261 ) I was pleased with the results soooooooooo. Id thought id slap some paint on the ole pontiac. I figured whats the risk, if it doesnt work out then im out 40 bucks, I ll have to sand it down and take her to Earl Schieb. here is a link to some pics on a shutterfly account i created.

the pics are the rattle can base coat, block sanded, 1st and 2nd coat of paint. Next will be some wet sanding as there is alot of crap in the paint. maybe 2 to 4 more coats, a final wetsand and polish.

I will post more pics as i progress.

Cheers

I used the rustoleum stuff...the Canadian flag hanging in the garage was my Father-in-laws flag.

here are the colors... It doesnt seem like it would be that hard to mix up any color you want...just mix more than enough and then thin it out with mineral spirits before you paint.

hmmmm....?? Maybe I can glean some paint mixing tips from my bud that works at the auto body supply...... can't let him know that I'm trying to mix Rustoleum though.
I mean if I get a quart of the bright yellow, what would I mix withit to arrive at the soft yellow....,beige? Oh well, maybe some experimenting is in order!! Now what was the temp outside when you did all this...

That is cool Vic. Looks pretty damn good.... nice job and pretty shiney too. And now I know where that hood scoop you made ended up. I DO like that. You did a great job on it and it looks cool.

BTW... don't let Old Goat 67 see this thread. Nuff said.

That just makes me jealous. $100 worth of stuff looks 10 times better than the $700 worth of paint I attempted (and failed) to spray properly on my car. lol

Looks great. It's awesome that you got the stones to do this to your goat, and get great results.

I dig the van. What motor is in it? I see a large tailpipe sticking out from underneath. Not still a 6 cyl is it?

thanks Gary. I am pretty happy with the way the hood scoop turned out also. and Old Goat 67 is welcome to chime in. I know there will be haters, nothing wrong with that.

Hey Tod, It still has the original 240 inline that i converted to multiport fuel injection. the big tail pipe is just that, a big stainless tip left over from the pontiac. im uploading a bunch of different pics of the van onto the same shutterfly account. pics from its humble beginning as an old utility vehicle for Cal State Los Angeles, pics of the fuel injection conversion, gas tank fabrications, sunroof installs, interior, front bumper relocation, paint and body, the gull wing door mod i did etc....the only problem is that they are not in any order really...sorry for that.

http://1966gto.shutterfly.com/

also, thanks again fellas for the compliments.

perhaps but CA is one of the worse states for uv killing paint
but you can top coat it several times and still be less cost than lots of paint jobs
having a good body line helps alot too
keep it waxed will help alot

I don't know how it looks in person, but it looks pretty damn good in the pics. I've seen a LOT of cars that were supposedly done by pros (who charged good money!) that don't look near as good!

Cool. I'll check out the pics. I always liked the look of vintage Econoline Vans/Trucks. More so than the look of comparable Dodge or GM vehicles (Corvair Van/Truck - yuck!).

I'd love to have an Econoline truck around for misc home/yard work, but I'm afraid it'd be another project (air ride, big wheels, maybe a Mod motor/etc). They look awesome slammed on the ground with 18's & 20's.

Rustoleum is some tricky stuff to use with a spray gun. It's real hard to control. It gets sags and runs easy if you put too much on. I sprayed some of the aluminum on a trailer. Sanding drips will clog sandpaper quick. It does not use hardner so the paint will stay soft a long time. You could use some cheap urethane for less than $100 and you would not have to do all that work. I think the John Deere paint is better quality but you are limited on the colors.

I used some on a trailer because it was the look I was after. I used a HF gun to put it on. It was twenty six dollars for a gallon. It had real good coverage, there is still a lot left. I have to fix a few spots. Once it dries, you will get some aluminum color on your fingers if you rub the paint. I don't know how it will last in the elements. It's easy enough to prep it again and spray more on if it goes south.

This just goes to show that most good paint jobs are 75% surface prep, 15% technique and 10% material choice...give or take
Nice job 6D6!
