OMG my back is killing me lol. i finished we actually started buffing and polishing the rest of car. all went well except i ran into a problem with my pass side rear qtr. I had a run there, i wet sanded it out the other day but when i went to polish it i could see it again. so i grabbed and old 2000 grit and a wet sponge and started to sand it out. well i had the radio up and apparently there was a grit of sand in there and put a bunch of scratches in the paint. soooo, i turned down the radio and started to wet sand the scratches out....thats when i hit base coat. damn. so, i guess the good thing is that i can simply re roll the rear qtr, wetsand and repolish..which is what i will do later. the rest of the car looks pretty good. i think i will go back over it again with the polish and some new foam pads. here is a pick of the good qtr.

ok,photo upload failed. i guess i ll try later,

Wow, that looks great. These posts keep making me regret buying all that expensive paint just to mess it up lol.

I agree. That looks great, nice and straight, too. I'm betting that paint job will last quite a while if taken care of. A lot of labor, but looks better than a ton of high-dollar jobs I've seen.

What about all those tight areas like inside the trunk seal lip, the inside corners of the tail panel, door hinge area, etc.? How did you approach those?

i rattle canned all the door jambs, trunk lid jamb, hood jambs, tail lights recesses with over spray to the area to be rolled. then when i wet sanded it took off the over spray where it is to be rolled on the exterior. i ll run out there and snap a shot..

You guys should try using an airless paint srayer you can rent from most paint stores.

comes out really well.

You can also use marine paints like awl grip that work really well,.

Looks awsome!

I was looking at the wagner spray guns lol...but i had success with the low tech (and less expensive) rollers so i went with that....maybe i ll bump up my game to a wagner on my next paint job I wonder if you can shoot a metal flake with a wagner?

well, i was playing around with mixing some Rustoleum Aluminum color with black. im thinking it would work if you could get the ratio right. im just not sure how well it would polish up. and also the flakes are very fine

Might not work that well, same principle as a single stage metal flake. If you sand and buff metalic single stage it burnishes the metalics causing a blotchy appearance.

i just did the trunk lid as a test.

pic 1 is what i started with. just rolled on and dried

pic 3 is after rubbing compound

pic 4 is after final glaze/polish

i just finished wetsanding the rear qtrs. now im off to hit the doors, hood and front fenders.
That glossy is really coming out nice. PLease update us as the car gets done and a total estimate of cost. I bought way too much paint when we duid my brothers civic. But again it was flat and took many coats for coverage.

How many coats again is that black??

It looks excellent. The queston is how long will it last with all the work you put into it. If you invested in a compressor, you would be able to use real automotive paint. If you added up the cost of all the supplies it might not be such a bargan. Black rustoleum might last 6 months out in the AZ sun before it starts to fade. You could have painted 4 cars with AU with the amount of work it takes to do rustoleum.

You can spray metalics like a pro with even the cheapest HF gravity feed gun they sell if you have a compressor. It only takes a few dollars worth of sand paper if the sand paper is not getting gummed from the paint. Black paint is on the bottom tier as far as paint cost go. It can also be bought as fleet paint. http://www.smartshoppersinc.com

I put some of this paint on my truck over 5 years ago. It can still be polished.

I think the idea was to get some paint on the car as quickly as possible and still have it look decent... at a very low cost.

Looks like it worked. And if anyone wants to change the color later, boom, just strip it and start over.
