Sad to see cars rotting like that.
The guy needs to google to learn about cars and stuff if he is into exploring.

Is that a clock in the console, or a tach, on the 65?

If I remember correctly the clock is in the console on the Super Sport, and if it had a tach it would be on the dash in the right most round gauge, which also in some cases if a tach was not present, would be a vacuum gauge.

Console has a clock behind the shifter and a round "SS" medallion in front. The SS with console/buckets had a vacuum gauge on the right side of the dash as standard equipment. Optional was the extra cost tachometer, but I read that the cars equipped with a 4-speed and the 327/300HP, 409/400HP and 396's got the tach as standard equipment. There were 2 tachs, 6,000 & 7,000 RPM. The Impala & Caprice got a clock as standard issue, with vacuum gauge/tach as optional. And, there was a clock delete filler panel which may have been for the lower priced Bel Air & Biscayne. My dad had a '65 Impala with clock, ex-wife had a '65 Impala SS with vacuum gauge, another local had a 327/300HP 4-speed/bench seat with tach, and I still have the tach I inserted in place of the vacuum gauge on ex-wife's SS.
There was also a mountable under the dash tachometer listed in the accessory booklet and assume it was dealer installed. Keep in mind that "back then", you could order additional upgrades or accessories through your dealer when ordering a car and filling out the order form if it was not a car you saw already on the lot. Each item added extra costs to the base car and even though we can look back now at these items and say "that wasn't that much," back then they were just as they are at todays prices. The difference today is that you cannot order individual upgrades, everything is now a "package." I recall in the late 80's I went to a Ford dealership. I wanted to order a base LX Mustang with just the 5.0 and 5-speed. No such thing. You had to order a "$$$$package" which included suspension, brakes, rims/tires, and other items as mandatory in order to get the 5.0. The days of the bare bones bench seat, rubber floor mat 383/4-speed Road Runner are gone. |
