My 72 TA is a non-unitized ignition car (standard single point distributor). Where should the coil mount? Does it bolt onto the intake or to the firewll? Does anyone have a photo of the correct placement for a coil on a 72 firebird? Thanks, NJSteve

HI Steve,
I'm not 100% sure on this, but I bleieve the coil bracket bolted to the intake. I am goign to look for some pics to verify this. This is information I need as well. Someone converted my '70 to HEI ignition before I got it, and I plan on converting it back to a points distributor when I put the RA IV enginf in it.

Steve, If you look at this photo of a '72 455 HO engine, yuo can see that hte coil is mounted to the back of the manifold. I don't have any software to edit the photo here at work, otherwise I'd draw a circle around it or something.

Here's a close up of the coil mounting on my blue Formula - before I overhauled the engine and detailed the engine compartment.

Hope this helps!

Thats interesting. It appears '72 used the same throttle and coil bracket as 73-74. I thought it used the same as my '71 455 HO. The coil is more strait up.

After viewing Dennis' reply, I checked my Pontiac MPC. That indicates one ignition coil bracket for '68-'71, '72 only, and '73-'74.

My standard ignition, automatic tranny 72 T/A has the coil mounted on the firewall.Does anyone know what year firebirds had it mounted to the firewall? Since Lloyd stated that there was a "72 only" bracket what was the difference? What other cars came with the same part number?

NO Pontiacs had the ignition coil mounted on the firewall!

According to my MPC's, ALL 1972 V8 Pontiacs, except for 307 Venturas - and models equipped with the unitized ignition system, used the same ignition coil mounting bracket. Group number 2.183, part number 1852592.

It is indeed a 1972 only part, but I'm unsure of the differences.

I'm unsure
