1970 GTO Trailer Hitch ?
A guy on another forum wants a hitch for his '70 GTO. I had one on my '69. Pulled ski & bass boats, a lot, without any problem.
Googled it. Can't find any ready-made hitches for it. Is it best to have one custom made, by a welder with trailer hitch fab experience ? Or, does anybody have info on a ready-made ? Or, does anybody here have a decent one for sale ? Can anybody here help me help this fellow Pontiac guy ? Below is the only pic I have of my hitch. TJ had her horse tied to it, getting ready for a short trail ride. The pic was taken in '72. Last edited by ponyakr; 07-18-2019 at 08:25 PM. |

No bolt ons specifically for a 1970 GTO that I could find. Reese has a universal fit that could be adapted to a GTO: https://www.amazon.com/Reese-Towpowe.../dp/B000CQOIR8

I have one supposedly off a '69 Firebird that I can't seem to get rid off (bumper type).
I can post pics if you like. For my Grand Prix I used a modern platform hitch and mounted it underneath. It's not period correct but it allows me to do what I wanted to do. K

There was one on my 77 t/a when I got it. It was a flat bar that went under the bumper and was attached at each end at the frame rails and then at the centre. One of the first things i took off. Unfortunately it went to the scrap yard. I have since seen the same type as a period Pontiac accessory. I will see if I have any pics of it.

My dad bought that horse from a local, very peculiar old guy, who promised him that she was a real good plow horse. Said he'd plowed his garden with her. He lied !
She wouldn't plow, at all, and was just barely trained to ride. TJ was going to college at the time, in Monroe, LA. When she found out about the horse, she asked if she could ride her. My dad told her that she was welcome, if she wanted to. So, she bought herself a cheapie saddle & bridle from Sears, & started riding her. After a year or so, TJ took her to Monroe & kept her in a stable, not far from the Ouachita river. She had a good place to ride, along the river levee. She got a real fussing at, for riding in a commercial pecan grove. Never did that again. She kept the horse there for about 4 years, then brought her to live in our back yard, when we got married in '78. Rode her for 17 years total, 'til she died. Her next horse was an Appy. Actually got him while she still had the other one. Trained him to ride, herself. Rode him for 20 years, 'til he died, in Dec of '99. Got another Appy, which she still rides. He's still goin strong. She has great places to ride, with plenty of woods, old logging roads, pipelines, etc. And she's had lot's of good trail dogs, thru the years. Had a pack of 5 at one time, & at least 3, during different periods of time, thru the years. The one she has now is a part Beagle, that just showed up here one day. In fact, that's how we got most of the dogs we've had. They all loved to go on trail rides. Never had one that didn't. So, she's still riding & I'm still tinkering with Pontiacs. It's been a good life. We are blessed !!! Last edited by ponyakr; 07-19-2019 at 09:41 AM. |

For anyone interested, below is a pic of a hitch that a guy took off a '70 Lemans.
Said he also had sold 2 of 'em, as NOS, still in the original Reese boxes, for $250 each, on Ebay. Appears to have bolted to the bumper, in the rear, & the trunk floor, in the front. The one I had was probably very similar, if not the exact same model. Don't know. Didn't install mine. I assume I had it installed at the boat dealership, where I bought my first ski boat & trailer. I do remember the dealership. The name was Howard Griffin. The showroom was right on the bank of the Ouachita river, where I did most of my skiing. When TJ & I were young, we both loved going there for Christmas shopping. They stocked up on toys, & filled nearly the entire boat/motorcylcle showroom. Called it "Howard Griffin Land O' Toys". There were no Wal-Marts or other big box stores in the area, back then. So, LOTS of Christmas toys were purchased there, from folks all around the Northeast Louisiana area. They did a lot of advertising, including on local TV stations. We can still remember hearing the little song they used on radio & TV. "Howard-Griffin Land of toys, loads of fun for girls & boys, bring the kids & look around, the biggest toy deal in the town." When I was a little older, my dad bought me a Cushman scooter & then later, a Honda motorcycle there. After I finished high school & got a job, I bought several boats, outboard motors, & motorcycles there. My last was a Harley Sportster, in '75. Yeah, I always loved that store. Good memories from my early years. https://www.washingtontimes.com/news...-on-in-memory/ https://i.pinimg.com/originals/f7/f1...621c3963cb.jpg Last edited by ponyakr; 07-19-2019 at 12:30 PM. |

It all depends on what the owner of the 70 GTO wants to haul. The universal one I posted is $115 and is class 3 up to 3500#

You will need to find an old school ball hitch. They are out there, I found an NOS one for mine.

Hey, that one gets my vote.
Just for conversation. What would you charge to build one of those, for someone else ? |

Charge?
Never thought about it. Got some tubing? |

Is there really any strength to the rear cross member? I thought you needed to get to the frame rails to do any type of pulling.

Not that much, but all I tow now is a small flatbed.
Can easily beef up that crossmember or reach out to the frame rails on an angle. It's called "geometry". You'd be surprised to know what that car has pulled with just a regular bumper hitch back in the day. Hated that thing, kept getting in the way of the gas filler door! |

I’ve been thinking about this since I posted several days ago. I’d sell the NOS (I do not believe it is GM) hitch I bought for my 70 LeMans. Nice, shiny chrome and never used. $150, I could bring it with me to Norwalk.

Gp only
I took a look at the hitch I have which is a Drawtite and it's stamped 1969-1970 Grand Prix and then Special below that so it probably wouldn't fit a Gt0 anyway.

I have one that came with a 67 El Camino and it is still in the box. A tag on it says 66-67 Chevelle. $120.00 shipped in the lower 48.
