Default Voltage Regulator Grounding?

1968 Firebird 400. I recently installed the 3 rubber grommets (well nut) to mount the Voltage Regulator to the core support. After that, Charge Light stays on. All works when I ground the base of the VR. So how is the base supposed to be grounded? I dont see any ground wire in the Wiring Diagram. The diagram shows the base being grounded, but it cant be grounded if its mounted with rubber well nuts?

GM car & truck wiper motors all use rubber mounts on their attachment screws. One of those bushings has a copper sheet that is crimped into the ring of the metal which contacts the mounting screw. I would imagine your voltage regulator has something like that as well.

It may be as simple as just a small copper or a black wire ground strap.

Since the F body program was mainly a Chevrolet development project I would contact one of the well known 1st Gen. Camaro vendors. I would think the Camaro mounts (or ground strap) for the VR are what you need. As I recall 1960s Chevrolet pick-up trucks in some years mounted their VR on the core support using rubber bushings so you might try one of those truck restoration parts vendors as well. The ground on the old metal can VRs is very important, you could easily damage your charging system with that part missing it's ground.

Found this. I looked all over the Camaro Forums, and no one ever mentioned a ground wire!https://www.americanclassic.com/1967...20group%20%231

My '68 has a ground wire that runs from the right side of the regulator base to a ground lug point above the washer bottle. Although I replaced the original regulator once over the years, the ground wire should be factory original. It also has a lead to the radio suppression capacitor connected to a terminal under the regulator. The '68 Pontiac Service Manual Fig 15-39 shows the ground wire.

Also, I just checked the '68 Camaro Assembly Manual (UPC 6 B6 Voltage Regulator) and (U63 A4 Radio-capacitors) it shows a ground wire that looks like the same mounting on my Bird.

I agree with Jim. Mine has a ground wire that attaches to the radiator support. I think it is a fork like spade connector that goes under a bolt with a star washer. I can look tonight.

Yes, it needs to be grounded. I asked John Pirkle once and he said if it’s not grounded the vr is nothing more than a connector.

Add a ground wire. The reg compares the alt voltage relative to ground so it needs that connection.

Made a ground wire from the base to the top bolt of the washer fluid bracket. All is well. I was confused, because I knew it had to be grounded but didnt see it in the wiring diagram. The diagram shows the base being grounded.
