Default Best exhaust kit

My local shop only has a crush style bender which isn’t gonna cut it so I am gonna buy a pypes or flowmaster or somebodies 3 inch mandrel Ben exhaust kit for my car. For those that don’t know it’s a 64 Tempest running Doug’s headers and will be 3 inch all the way. Which of the kits out there for the best and can easily be installed in the driveway until I can get it to the exhaust shop to get it welded up. I don’t want to clamp it together I want it welded. I don’t care if it’s an h pipe or x pipe. I am still up in the air about mufflers. They will be bought separate not in the kit cause I am leaning towards Borla. Are the kits setup for center inlet offset outlet or offset offset or what? Thanks for all the help you can give me.

I know my question about the pypes kit is similar but I am looking at the Flowmaster and any other kit that will allow me to self install and take the mufflers I want to use

I use the Magnaflow exhaust systems. They fit well and sound nice, I have one in my 64 GTO

Are you using their mufflers? Do you have headers? Any drone in the cruising RPM range?

Default x pipe

Yesterday I had the 2.5 X pipe installed on my Buick 455 with flow master 40's [ factory exhaust manifolds ] WOW ! let me tell you , LOUD growl from this setup, I love it. but its not for everyone, its a nasty beast coming down the road.

I used the Ram Air Restorations 3" oval x pipe (kit) and the 2.5" mufflers and tail pipes for clearence and to be slightly quieter. I used V band clamps from the collectors to the round conversion piece and it really looks good and fits tight. I am limited in room in the rear with a Helwig rear way bar and a Fays2 Watts link for the rear to get around. The tail pipes fit with the valance splitters I needed to cut them 3" shorter on install. Pretty impressed but a good day to get fabricated installed and fit in. The small cost for the V - band clamps will make it much easier if I need to remove a header or the X pipe asssembly in the future.
The key opinion is "WOULD I USE THIS AGAIN?" yes I would as it really fit and worked well.

The V band clamps. I wish I had used them on mine. They are awsome.

Yeah, V Band clamps. Wish I had thought of that. I had mine flanged in with normal 3 bolt triangular exhaust flanges. I thought I was smart, always someone with a better idea out there lol.

That is what my muffler shop insisted on over regular band clamps. Not V-band clamps. They are just a PITA if you have to remove the exhaust.

I believe Torq-Tech is who my brother used for his 68 with 3" exhaust. He was able to do it himself and it fit really well.

I don't care for the V-band either. They are a bit difficult sometimes to monkey around with. Have used them on a couple of turbo cars for piping. They seal nice and tight and look clean when done, but just not always easy to remove.

When I want to make a section of exhaust removable I'll use the thick 2 bolt flanges, cut the pipe, weld them in, done. 3 bolt works fine for that too, I just find the 2 bolt fits in tighter places better and can be clocked so nothing hangs down and stays out of view.

As for kits, Torque Tech was the best out there. Wish they were still around. Mufflex is another I've used that makes large systems that fit very well but they tend to cater to newer generation stuff last time I checked.

I've used Pypes and Flowmaster kits on both F-body and A-body. I can say that neither of them are a direct fit and will absolutely take some fiddling around and tweaking to get the fit just right. The easiest and much more forgiving to do are the A-bodies because they have a generous amount of room to work with. F-bodies take a bit more work. But all those kits do fit, look, and perform well enough if you spend a little time with them.

I've had 2 kits from Ram Air Restoration that have both fit and performed extremely well. Not the cheapest, but very well made. You have your choice of crimp bend or mandrel bent.
