Ours came off the first time we took our new GTO through the car wash.

It fell off, or you didn't like the look of them? Had to be one of the first years GM put decals on a car? I can't think of other models with decals. Heck even the dealers were putting heavy "dealers name" emblems on the cars until the mid to late 70's weren't they?

I had a 75 Cutlass back in the 80's with a metal dealer plaque riveted on the truck lid

Also would love to see a repop decal laid over an original. I would bet any money they are different in some way.

I think a black car with red interior, red decals and redline tires would be super sharp, but don't think I've ever seen one.

Yes. (Ie "both").

It was one of those carwashes where you get out and they run it through for you.

After the car popped out of the end they pulled it off to the side and a bunch of people gathered around. Dad walked over to see what was going on and the manager said "Van - I'm really sorry but one of those decals came right off ".

Dad looked at it and said "good. Now I don't have to pull them off myself ".

The "eyeball" technique....centered vertically on the light and I think it was 1" between the "O" and the light

I'll order a set and check that out, report back and let you know. I'm going to assume everyone offers the same decals, unless someone knows different please speak up.

I'll take some measurements and post those up, as well as make a template for ease of applying the new ones.

Here's mine, both decals must have made it through the car wash lol, they resemble the dealer brochure and adds posted earlier.

I've never seen them up high or down low, maybe I just never noticed but these are Kansas original, my car has most of the factory paint.

Whoever primed it did a little "uh-hem" excuse me... body work, but luckily never bothered to strip it.

Is cameo Ivory an off white, or should be? I have an aftermarket set that I have had since I started my project. They look pretty much like plain white.

I'll bet the aftermarkets are slightly different than the originals. Nothing else is the same repop, why would the decals be?

I got my GTO when it was eight years old already ... the decals always looked a slightly off white to me, not a full on Ivory, but not bright white either ... but then it was eight years old at that point.
But to answer your question, Cameo Ivory is an "off white", should have a tan tint to it if you hold up a piece of white paper next to it.

Jut noticing how low the suspension looks on that last pict. Pretty sure that's lower than the spec'd 9.75-10.25 (I think that's the range anyway)

I have my front springs shortened a smidge & they are not that low. However, I know the original tires are G70? are about an inch larger than what I have on my car, so that's part of it

I used the TLAR method on mine...I actually was looking for a photo from an old MT article that had a great straight on side shot of the marker light and decal. Couldn't find it but it was my guide for placement. About 1/2 a letter's length ahead of the light and the top of the decal about a quarter to midway down.

Actually remembered that it was the Car of the Year article... It's still out there online.

When I did my 68 I looked through 1968 sales brochures, magazine ads and articles. As everyone else has stated there’s no consistency. I ended up placing them the same way they were on the cover of the sales brochure. As I look at the photos I should have gone an inch lower and in the center of the arrow head. But it looked fine for 25 years.

I've got that original issue of Motor Trend by the way ... used it for reference many times.

I don't know why I'm enjoying this thread so much. Maybe because it seemed like such a simple question for a very visible part of the car, but the answer really speaks to the variability of plant quality back in the day.

I find the response in post number three to be most interesting.

Had to re-read I am thinking maybe his thoughts could have to do with it being 2001? I have learned sooooo much on this site & other places since that time.

It is interesting though. I had a friend stop by a couple weeks ago & he was surprised that the car would have vinyl decals. I could see people in 1968 peeling those off as its was for sure an era of metal emblems heck even the dealers were riveting on metal logos back then. I think that would have bugged me if I would have been a car buyer in that era.

When did decals like this first start appearing on GM cars as name callouts? Just curious.
