Default Rear Diff Oil capacity

Anybody know how much oil the 10 bolt housings typically hold? I was going to dump a quart in with the GM additive before I put the cover on & then top it off at a later date. Thinking it would be over 1 Qt. guessing ring gear size & carrier type play a small roll in displacement.

Can always put it all through the fill plug too, but sure would be easier & less mess to get close while the cover is off & its in the right position
(not in the car obviously)

should be about two quarts. with the rear installed you should fill it til the oil starts dribbling out of the fill hole plug. a piece of 3/8 hose about 6" long on the bottle nozzle to the hole and squeeze. Then pull the hose back out to see if the oil starts leaking back out the hole.

You are going to pour oil in it with the rear cover off? It's going
to run all over the ground if you do that!!!!!! Put the cover on and fill it till it starts running out of the fill hole!

I'm assuming that he has the differential on a stand with the pinion pointing down.

Yep, pinion down, not in the chassis I was not very clear in my post.
I'll put 1-1/4 QTS & the additive in & check the level at a later date.

if it's sitting on jack stands across the tubes, you can always get a third stand to prop under the pinion and bring the nose up level and fill it right there. I'd probably do that anyways just so all the oil isn't laying down in the pinion in case your seal leaks and you find a lake in the garage next time you go in there.

Done!

Actually its hanging from hooks in the ceiling. If the front seal leaks I will be screaming & you just might hear it from NY

I Really didn't want to put the limited slip tag back on the cover. Any chance this was skipped on some cars? I had it on from my first go around, but not so sure I want it now. Unless maybe I painted it black?

Thoughts?

I'd put it back....remember, it's not for decoration or 'correctness'...It's actually to inform whoever is servicing it to use the correct oil.

Interestingly, its an item I am not seeing much with google images, at least as far as what they should look like & position. The one I have is so shiny & its 15 years old! guessing these were originally just a dull tin tag like one on the transmission case? I still have that too. not sure where exactly that one goes either though. Suppose that might be in the 69 assembly manual?

It feels good to finally be putting some things together. I have been painting & storing finished parts in my basement for about 3 years or so with zero assembly.

well, I wouldn't trust most images on the internet anyways. almost every one I see is installed wrong. they were mounted "backwards" and then the tag bent over the top of the bolt so you read it there and have to bend the tag out of the way to access the bolt. Everyone seems to install them sticking off the bolt straight. Every original virgin rear I had was done that way. Just about every car at the car shows has them sticking off straight and it bugs the living hell out of me!

Should the attached label be on the trunk lid for limited slip cars??

never seen one of those tags on a 68-69, I think they were used in the earlier 60's

I've never seen one of those stickers at all.
As for the metal tag, what gto4ever points out above is correct. I recall one of the members here taking great pains to point that out many times over the years. Tag mounted backwards, at I believe at approximately the 10 or 2 o'clock position(?) and then bent back over the bolt-head so you had to see it and move it out of the way to remove the bolt..
The manufacturer knew it was important to make it easy for anyone servicing the rear to know that it required limited slip oil.

Greg, not sure if you're 10/2 was in reference to how his picture was oriented, but I've found the tag mounted to the first bolt to the right of bottom center

PS, I'm jealous of how smooth that rear end looks! mine's a pock marked wasteland of pits!

Not in reference to that Dennis...I just thought I remembered it being up top. I did find a photo of one in the spot that you have circled so that's probably correct.

So was it mounted inverted, then bent over the bolt so it could be read?

The pit marks are why I had taken my entire chassis back apart. I Decided to get rid of all of them on every chassis part.
It was a long uninspiring process, but that's behind me now. my cover & axle tubes had plenty of pits in them before.

correct. put it on backwards and then bend it back over the bolt to be read.

well, congrats, it looks great. I'd never attempt it around here, the bondo would be bubbling back up with rust under it in 3 days. I live in the land of insta-rust and short of a trailer queen that lives in a climate controlled environment at zero humidity and 75 degrees year round, it would be toast!

Have personally pulled factory GM posi units out of over a thousand yard cars/ core rears, and out of own project cars, partscars/ loose customer rears that came in to be rebuilt.
There were a TON of rear axle plant factory installations of the alum posi tag where the embossed lettering was readable towards back of the car, then the tag was rolled over & when viewed one will see the back side of the alum tag, lettering is backwards! Often a coat of thin black paint or undercoat is on the backside of the alum tag from when car was originally dealer prepped. Near the build bench have big ziplock full of such used tags.

Not saying this is factory correct, but this is the way I found mine when I disassembled and how I put it back.

I was so close to going with a more natural look on the rear. Had a really hard time deciding between that & black. Looks nice! The tag I have is so shiny. might need to dip it in something or paint it to tone it down a bit
