2019 Pontiac Powered Class Racing
Won't be long now til the 2019 season will kick off, out on the West coast. The Winter Nats is the 1st national event. In looking at the pre-entry lists, I noticed that there are no entries listed for the Pro categories. That may also be the reason why Randi Lyn Shipp is not on the list with her '67 Bird Stocker. Maybe Randi & Bo will be racing there & are just not on the list yet. I'll do some more checking on that.
https://www.nhra.com/schedule/2019/n...nals-presented https://autoweek.com/article/nhra/nh...-minor-changes Lindy Lindholm & Leo Glasbrenner are the only 2 Pontiac powered Stockers on the list. https://www.nhraeventreg.com/ListEve...=PC1&cc=8&rn=1 Lindy & Leo are also on the SS list, along with Larry Maxwell. Don't know if Lindy will run his '74 Bird in Stock or SS. Also noticed that JB Clegg is on the SS list, with the Clegg '73 SD455 Bird. Don't know if he'll be there or not. It's a long haul from South Texas to Pomona. But, I hope he makes the trip. https://www.nhraeventreg.com/ListEve...=PC1&cc=7&rn=1 Good luck to all Pontiac powered racers this season ! Rock Running '74 GTO
Got a question for some of you guys who have been keeping up with Pontiac class racing for a long time.
Ran a cross a couple of pics from the US Nats. In the 2nd pic, there is a trophy which isn't a Wally. Do any of you guys know if he just won his class, or did he win the race ? And, what year was that ? The last pic shows a '74 GTO US Nats winner. It appears that Rock's GTO is in the far lane. So, was this an all '74 GTO final at the US Nats, with Rock being RU ? What year was this ? Last edited by ponyakr; 01-26-2019 at 01:42 AM. |

Randi Lyn Shipp had her '67 Bird at a recent test session at a Florida track. So I reckin that means she's gonna race it again this season.
The season gets under way next weekend, with the div 2 race in Orlando. http://www.raceosw.com/dragway/2019/...DRS_01-1-1.jpg |

I’m curious what that status is with the Burton’s and Michael Brand for this season.

https://www.facebook.com/mbrand505b https://www.facebook.com/mrslindseybrand Member Norman Warling posts here some. He lives close to Scott, & usually knows what the Burtons are doing. I assume they'll run Brads red car & the 3rd gen GT car. Don't know about The B/SA car. 1st heard it was sold. Then heard that deal fell thru. Norman can also tell us about the season plans for his car, his brother Carroll's cars, & Gary Riley's wagon. Last year, I think Norman was trying to round up parts to possibly build a 421 SD engine for his '62 Cat. Don't know if that's still in the works or not. https://www.facebook.com/BradleyJBurton https://www.facebook.com/diane.burto...on=friends_tab There are other Pontiac class racers who post here. Maybe some of 'em will let us know what their plans are for this season. Adam Strang was considering trying a 350HO, in his '68 Bird. Even got some new forged pistons approved for it. https://www.facebook.com/adam.strang.3 Out on the West Coast, Leo Glasbrenner is entered in the Winter Nats, along with Lindy Lindholm, & Larry Maxwell. Randy Lyn Shipp & JB Clegg are also on the list to make that long tow. Last edited by ponyakr; 01-27-2019 at 07:25 AM. |

Found the answer to my questions in post #6.
Al Vanis won stock, in his '74 Vent, in '74. Rock Running won his class at the event. The pic showing the 2 cars running each other was not the final round. Here is a link to the '74 national events winner & RU. Vanis is misspelled Vanisyl. http://www.nhra.net/50th/results.asp?mYear=1974 Might also be of interest to Pontiac fans that the same '68 Bird won Stock at the US Nats in '73 & '77. Truman Fields was driving in '73 & Mike McKinney was driving in '77. http://www.nhra.net/50th/results.asp?mYear=1973 http://www.nhra.net/50th/results.asp?mYear=1977 Also, in '77, Mick Leiferman got his 3rd RU in a row. That may still be the record. But, at least we had an all Pontiac Stock final ! While looking thru some of the National event winners, I found a few other Pontiac winners. Probably missed some, since I don't know the names of all the past Pontiac winners. Jim Wangers won Stock in '60. http://www.nhra.net/50th/results.asp?mYear=1960 Jack Mullins won SS in '75 at the US Nats & 2 other national events, as well as one RU. That's a pretty good season ! http://www.nhra.net/50th/results.asp?mYear=1975 Sonny Ray's '72 GTO won SS at the Cajun Nats in 79, 82, & '83. David Rampy was driving in '83. It was the 1st of many for David. http://www.nhra.net/50th/results.asp?mYear=1979 http://www.nhra.net/50th/results.asp?mYear=1982 http://www.nhra.net/50th/results.asp?mYear=1983 At the '77 US Nats, when Mike McKinney won Stock, he also won his B/S class, and the former owner of his car, Truman Fields, won C/S with the '68 Bird that McKinney had traded to Truman, in the deal. I'm headed to the Arizona Nationals and then to the divisional in Tucson.
Scott Burton is taking the 70 Firebird to the Gator Nationals, where the new owner is racing it. Scott will be driving the SS/GT car. Brads first race will be Las Vegas. Carroll Warling might make the race in Tucson. |

Pomona
Randi Lyn Shipp qualified in the #8 position, with a 1.002 under, 10.398. Leo Glasbrenner was #34 with a 10.52.
https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop The Pontiac powered SS qualifiers were driven by Leo Glasbrenner, Larry Maxwell, JB Clegg, & Art Peterson. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop Leo had the only Pontiac to survive round one of elims. He did it with both cars. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop |
