Help Decoding a 65
Can someone tell me about this car from the data plate?
23737 is hardtop LeMans which is correct for GTO option But what about the build plant and paint color. I remember 218 is parchment. Thanks

At least in 64 the third letter is typically wheel color - which is black in this case.

I am certain this car is a rebody. Jams are red and has a 100% black interior and factory ac which isn’t on the tag

I wouldn't say it's a rebody. Very likely a car that's trim tag got missing somewhere along the way and an owner found a tag off a car in a junkyard and just rivited it on. I would check the vin tag in the drivers side door jamb for any sign of tampering. (wrong rivits, installed backwards, etc.)

How about getting the PHS document based on the VIN on the door jamb?

This is the correct answer If you were inclined you could also post the vin or partial vin here and someone may be able to tell you if the body# is within a reasonable sequence with respect to the VIN #. |

If it is a rebody, likely the VIN tag and Date Plate match each other and came from the same car while the body and certain options appearing on the car will not match to the PHS record for the VIN.
Assuming body panels for '65 feature the same sort of date code stamping that exists on '64 Fremont builds (and others too I think, but since mine is a Fremont build, I can speak to it more confidently), a buyer could easily check the many body part date code stamps (glass date codes is another indicator) to see if they match up to an early Feb build. The body parts will have a week of the calendar year date code stamp so should be very low in this case (or possibly very high if from Dec '64). You could also check the frame p/n and date stamping on the side of the left side frame rail near the back to see what it might show. Two tone paint was a relative rarity. As far as A/C not being coded on this Data Plate despite the car having it, I would have to check. Fremont coded very few options by UPC codes. I don't recall if A/C was one of them. PHS will likely be correct for the VIN tag on the car. But the car may as you suspect have originally sported a different VIN tag and Data Plate. |

Looks like pop rivets with the center part knocked in.

See the neat article thread in this section about the wheel color for the third color code for Frement cars in 64-65 that is where the A comes in
