Yesterday I drove my '64 GTO Convertible for the first time since Feb 1990. I am in need of troubleshooting help and will be posting about that next.
First pic was taken on the day I purchased it in Boise, Idaho. Stopped for gas and then drove home to Chicago. Following weekend I began to disassemble it, body off the frame. Moved it long distance that way and in boxes 3 times before getting serious about putting it back together. It was still being assembled when I moved again. Late January it was delivered to me. Tires were still the ones I drove it from Boise with, they were disintegrating. Got the steel wheels powdercoated and then chose Tiger Paw whitewalls. 2nd pic taken recently. A month ago I started installing the fresh tires. After installing 3 wheels, I discovered a puddle of brake fluid under the left front, poorly rebuilt wheel cylinder had leaked and made a mess. That stalled me but yesterday I put it all back together. Put the top down and wife and I took it out for a cautious Sunday drive. Got a couple waves along the way. Now back in the garage while I work thru the punch list of issues. Last edited by John V.; 04-29-2019 at 03:23 PM. |

65 GTO
Here's a new addition, it's a "driver" condition car with very rough paint due to poor storage (long story). The worst part is it has rust at the base of the windshield. The good news is it has 19,560 miles, many original parts including ignition wires, spare tire, 2 factory redlines and all the important stuff including most of it's factory exhaust (but needs replacement soon). The car drives extremely tight and the doors close like new.
It's a 4-speed with remote mirror, a.m. radio, back-up lights and 2-speed wipers. Pontiac assembly plant. The deluxe wheel covers I added. The tires I replaced with the bias-ply look radials, the car had radials on it when I purchased it and the driving difference was improved enough to give these tires a try. Still drives like an old GTO but with slightly better response and not as sensitive to road imperfections. The car is photoed about 100 feet away from my cell phone camera. You heard of "20 footers" this car requires a little more distance for most people, but the originality is very high. It sort of reminds me of the 1964 silver GTO that was on e-bay in Southern California several months back. I'll be driving this a lot, going to shows, errands, out to dinner and maybe the dragstrip. Should be fun!

Guy's, thank you for the kind words. Chris I added the Deluxe covers, I like the nostalgic plain look.
I had GTO'S my entire driving life, but this lack of power steering at low speed is a heck of a reminder of the old day's. Damn goat is one step above a horse trying to parallel park in town tonight. :--)

Forever project.
Snapped a few pictures while shuffling the cars around this weekend so I could focus on the 421 install. Getting back to it now that my air-cooled distractions are both back on the road.

I'm loving that convertible. Should be a blast to drive with a new 421.

1964 Lemans Sport Coupe. I've owned it about five weeks. Sat in a garage last ten years, and somebody else's garage before that. Spoke with the last two owners. Georgia car, no rust, but in need of paint.
I drove it home, then replaced the alternator, points, plugs, condenser, starter & battery, new upholstery on the front buckets, and have put over 1500 miles on it. This week it gets new rear springs, with airbags, and new KYB Shocks. On the list are wheels, tires and a new front bumper (the old one is bent up), and a bigger motor..
