Default 1965 GTO trim tag

Could anybody post pictures of their 65 GTO trim tag with automatic?

I'm trying to figure out if a car I own has the console. On the build sheet, it shows automatic with buckets, but no console. The console is in the car no the correct column shift.. Has anyone else seen a 65 GTO with column shift and buckets? This car was built at the Pontiac plant if that makes a difference.

If your build sheet doesn't have it, that tells me your car wasn't born with it.

IIRC If your tag shows a 2G it had a console.

I had a '65 LeMans with buckets and column shift auto, no console. The car was nut and bolt original.

I believe bucket seats were standard on both LeMans and GTO.

The last GTO I owned was a column shift, no console. And it was a factory tri power car with Ralley Guages, Wood Wheel, posi, etc. I'm sure it was special ordered.

I have also seen/worked on a 64 GTO Hardtop that was a Tri-Power/column shift auto, bucket seat vehicle No console.

Not sure where it was built.

My guess is the person that ordered the car assumed that a 4 speed and console were standard, and got a very unpleasant surprise.

Our 68' GTO was a column shifted auto, bucket seat, no console.

I was always embarrassed about that column shifted auto when I was growing up.

I owned a 67 GTO automatic on the column, It didn't look sporty but I think the shifter mechanism is more precise and safer to use when manual gear changing.

In '64 & '65, the Lemans standard interior included Bucket Seats. This was true with or without the GTO option. A couple GTOs have been identified that got the Bench Seat as an approved Special Order Request, they would be extremely rare (not necessarily desirable) today.

If you ordered the Automatic, the standard arrangement was the column shift.

If you ordered the Console in addition to the Automatic, the shifter was mounted in the Console, the column shift stuff was eliminated. You could not get a Console in an Automatic equipped build with a column shifter. You also could not get the Console in a bench seat build.

A Pontiac Plant built '64 or '65 Lemans (with or without GTO option) would show accessory code Group 2, Code G on the Data Plate if it was built with the Console.

Rare occasion the guy making up the Data Plate might have failed to emboss all the codes onto the Data Plate that were listed on the Trim Manifest. The Trim Manifest governed the build, the Data Plate did not, it would simply reflect a regurgitation of manifest information. It was useful post-build, it was not useful during Final Assembly.

However, it would be near impossible for the '64 PHS Pontiac Plant Production Manifest record or the '65 Billing History Card to fail to code the Sales Code 601 Console if the build included it.

Check Box 60 for a code and understand that the code is "additive". 3 different options could be coded in Box 60. The Console was included if the code shows 1, 3, 5, or 7.

If Box 60 is blank, or is coded with a 2, 4, or 6, then the build did not include the Console and if Automatic equipped, the shifter would have been column mounted.

One other caveat, if the PHS record does not seem to "match" the Data Plate, it could suggest a stolen vehicle from back when the car was new. Auto theft was rampant in those days. Pro thieves would disguise a theft by swapping out the VIN tag from a wreck. But they wouldn't touch the Data Plate. Which leads to all sorts of mismatches between PHS VIN records and info shown on a Data Plate. More than a few GTOs still exist today with these obvious mismatches. Isn't common but if the build doesn't seem to jibe with the PHS record for the VIN, that is sometimes is the reason why.

John, to expand on your decode:

Group 1, Code E means Tinted Glass - All Windows. Group 1, Code W would indicate Tinted Glass - Windshield Only

Group 2, Code K means A/C with ducting specific to a Console equipped build. Group 2, Code E would mean A/C with ducting specific to a non-console equipped build.

Group 2, Code W is specific to the 2 speed Buick Super Turbine Automatic Trans. The GTO never used the Chevy Powerglide. Pontiac did use the Powerglide in ‘64 as an alternate to the Super Turbine but only for 6 cyl builds, either way the 6 cyl auto trans was air cooled. This was ‘64 only, no use of the Powerglide after ‘64.

That's the tag from my car. According to my dad, it was originally equipped with the 2-speed and a 4-barrel 389, console, and buckets. I don't recall any tint on the glass and I'm not sure if this is original glass. When he bought the car in 1985, it had an Oldsmobile 455 with a TH400 transmission. Just trying to help Tygrr67 by posting my tag.

A “factory” air condition car would have been built with full tint glass, all windows.

In '66, dad got a loaner Mustang GT coupe in poppy red with the 4 speed and dual trumpet exhausts. Coolest thing ever to a 5 year old. When he got his white '66 Mustang home, first thing I did was run to the back of the car to check out the cool trumpet/louvered exhausts. When I saw the single brown tube, turned down, on one side of the car, I almost cried. I was ashamed of that exhaust growing up, and diverted friends attention to the cool spoked steering wheel and sporty dash......sigh.........
