Following instructions from KRE I made 618 hp at 6200 with KRE “310” d-ports on a stock block 474 with a solid roller spec’d by Jeff K with a port matched Victor , 850 mighty demon and 2” maddog headers on 92 pump gas 12 or 13 years ago...

Regarding the 631 hp 468 combination did KRE divulge the specifications on that solid roller ? Or typical secret squirrel material !

Secret squirrel material, those cam specs

I remember years ago within the editor's letter in Hot Rod magazine it was stated how refreshing it was for the engine builder to divulge the specs for the cam used in a featured engine combination in that same issue. And if I remember correctly it was a Pontiac build. He also stated that in the future he personally was not going to publish engine articles unless the builder was willing to state the cam specs used. Personally I applaud that.

Daily driver? I wouldn’t.

50 mile round trip cruise, just fine. Drove it for pleasure all the time.

Could be tough on valve springs, comp 917, if I recall.

It would not take any sort of special cam to get 631 HP with High Ports. If you did not at least get close to that with a decent solid roller you did something wrong.

No many high power pump gas hp headed engines out there on stock blocks. But maybe you know of some?

631 HP pump gas is not exactly "high power" as far as I am concerned. 600 HP steet'able stock block engines have been around for a long time.
This engine is just a little more powerful. Not sure what the big deal is. You would have to try, not to make 600 HP.
You can not tell me if I just bolted my High Ports on my old 455 I would not make 600 HP just the way it sits.

No idea what yours made or would make. All im saying is 630hp from small'ish ci and a truly street friendly isn't nearly as easy as you make it out to be. Imo

A few combinations ago Steve C designed an excellent true street stock block 455 with Edelbrock heads that made right around 600 HP. He also was kind enough to share the results from a bunch of different manifolds he tested. It is easy to yap on the Internet about making 600 hp. and a lot more difficult to actually complete the project and achieve the number.

Funny I came across a post today from 2008 with some guy yapping about Hi-ports that have yet to see a splash of combustible mixture.... Again a lot easier said than done.

why such a small bore on an MR1 block? Maybe KRE just wanted to show what could be done with a factory block and as-cast high ports but it was easier for them just to build an MR1 than do all the prep work to have a factory block live at those power levels?

You know, that was the start of 4 mills in a row closing I worked at.
One thing, I am persistent and have a tenacity about racing.
Just like you will always be a pile. Whatever makes you feel better.
This engine is going to rock.

Right off KREs website, 80cc High Ports, puny 230 duration, .565 lift hyd roller, pump gas on a 463 made 580 horsepower. Thats a high lift RAIV cam for all intents and purposes.
No one can tell me a .264-.271, .750 lift sold roller will not make 600+ as easy as falling off a log.
You would actually have to try and not make 600 with a real cam.
The cam I am running right now, bought on a whim for 140$ would make over 600 HP. roughly .264-.271 .689 lift

Is 264-271 .750 a daily driver cam that you're going to put thousands of miles on? You're thinking more race from my understanding the engine we're talking about is more street. And since kre isn't sharing cam specs as far as we know it could be like a RAIV cam that's in it.

Highest-End Street Compr datapoint:
Local fella drives a 30s Coup with a 470 CID Mopar at 15:1 compr. Runs 110 and gets < 2 MPG when in proper tune.

Estimated at 900 HP by design, yet unuseable due to high-rpm (5000-8500) power band, and it eats plugs down, after a tank or two. Never raced due to un-drivability. Fella is a great tuner, and has about 30 roller cams at home representing his pursuit of bigger lobes, durations, and resulting LSA, and ICL.

I think. he strayed away from where we Pontiac Performers have achieved.
Best thing it does is sound great at idle. And it sounds the best i've heard from a street combo. 2nd best observation is the carbon-free exhaust piping.

I think Pontiacs have achieved better Street manners and plug manners, with less compression and with a wiser cam profile. Whatever Mike Leech (and the ECM NA folks!) had/have for a cam & install; head in that direction..

I believe it was a swap over from a stock block.

I posted this simply because it made over 600hp on pump gas with untouched heads.
