67 GTO rear speaker grille color
Folks - for 1967 did the rear speaker grille get painted a flat or semi-gloss black, or a like ‘66 was it to match the interior color.? Mine was ordered from the factory. I have one on the car, looks original, and it appears to be painted a flat black.
Thanks, Rob |

Hmm. I'll be waiting to hear an answer too. I have a 66 w black int. Looking to add a rear speaker, thinking it's a low luster or matte black..

Rear Speaker
Not so sure about that speaker cover. Looks aftermarket to me.
Factory installed rear speakers utilized a package tray with holes in it underneath the interior colored mesh. Below is my 65 with its OEM package tray for it’s rear speaker. 65-67 are the same. CT

I've replaced a speaker grille on a '64, but never seen a '67 with one. The one pictured above looks correct to me. In fact you can buy a mesh panel (non original) with hidden holes for dual rear speakers.

I have an unusual setup in my 67 GTO convertible with rear speaker option (AM radio). Legend has it, the original owner could not hear the rear speaker with the top down, so he had the dealership remove the rear speaker and install a round speaker in the driver door. That setup is currently there today. And the rear speaker switch seems to control the door speaker.
I am considering going back to the rear speaker. And hoping the wiring is still there. I can order the speaker box, ground wire and speaker from Ames. Does anyone have pictures of the convertible rear speaker setup? Last edited by pilot737; 09-06-2020 at 08:39 AM. |

FWIW...
It's been my observation over the years that if your 66-67 was ordered with a rear speaker your car would have the perforated package tray cover,
otherwise your package tray was solid. And then there were Dealer Add-On. It's my understanding this would be with a kit that used a speaker grill. I have never seen any grill that wasn't rectangular, but I've also leaned to never say never on how some of these old cars went together. I was always under the impression the Spearker Grill would be color keyed to your interior and have seen several finished in that fashion. I also think it looks far better this way. However, a larger percentage of the grills I've examined were matt/flat black. So one can assume to save time and money it likely was black. I have also never seen any models with rear Defogger Grill and a Speaker Grill, not sure there was a rule but just my observation. JM2C Cheers.

Here is a 1964 low mile Survivor with it’s factory installed rear defogger, speaker and reverb unit.
No speaker grill, just the perforations under the package tray mesh. CT

Looking in the parts book and it looks like the Grill was the same retangular style from '66-'72 exc wagons of course.

I guess that if someone wanted a rear speaker in a car not already equipped, then the package tray would be cut out and the speaker grill added. My 67's all had the perforated package tray and no grill.
