i assume pontiac was keeping with tradition by building the GTO off the lemans body (making minimal visual changes), but does anyone else think the GTO should have looked like the Grand Am and the Grand Am more like the GTO. the G/A was the far better looking car, imo. just seems odd.

By 1973, performance was a dirty word in Detroit. Pontiac wanted to have a 4 door world class sporty model, and a 4 door GTO would have been wrong, so they named in Grand Am.

i just saw that Grand Am production for '73 was 43,136!! well above the previous year's GTO production of 5,673 - if that # is accurate. i had no idea the G/A sold that well, even though we had a brand new one in our driveway. you guys are dead on!

Pea green with brown interior. I don't care if it's one of one.

It's not horrible if fresh and with the right stripes...

compared to the much more integrated front end of the grand am, that front bumper on the GTO looks... umm, regrettable. still hard for me to believe they wanted the GTO to look worse than the new Grand Am, but it certainly appears that way.

To boost profit margins, Pontiac G.M. Martin Caserio tried to position Pontiac to be more like Oldsmobile and Buick, substituting luxury in place of performance. He took over in the fall of 1972. Originally, the SD-455 was supposed to be optional in GP, Grand Am, GTO, and Firebird lines. It was amazing that it even made it into the F body lines. The GTO barely held on due to poor sales in '72.

imagine if we did have a '73 SD455 GTO... styling aside, they would have to be nearly as collectible as the SD T/As. the one huge advantage is the styling of the '73 trans am (and the '74) was a favorite among most and the GTO would not have been as well liked, but it certainly would have made for an interesting option in the pontiac market today.

Performance may have been a "dirty word", but Firebird sales say otherwise.
And, the plastic Grand Am front was meant for the postponed '72 GTO colonnade body. I think since Buick and Olds kept the GS and 442, that Pontiac kept GTO for '73. And yeah there was a Chevelle Malibu SS, too. 442 ended up being the most successful colonnade sporty package, continuous from 73-77. [sales up in 76/77] As with real estate, can look up comparable sales online to get a ball park price, but the saying "as much as a buyer is willing" applies. This olive green '73 is like the Verdedo [sp?] green 1968 Goats, popular when new, but now most go 'huh'? [not me] |
