72 HO 455 4 speed GTO
I have been told of a 72 GTO HO 455 4speed Reville silver with the broken black stripe down the side. I got the VIN this morning- 2D37X2P------. Car has 25,000 miles on the clock. Car has been sitting since the late seventies and never winter driven. Been in a barn and is several hundred miles from me up north. Headliner is shot and probably the rest of the interior from what I can tell. Car is original except for a set of headers and another exhaust system. Is this car all that rare and desirable as I was told it has power windows and several other options that could put this car as 1 of 3 built. Opinions please and what is the value of this car. Thanks Ed

Full blown WW5 cars bring 66K at auction(2020 Mecum) Those are fully restored. So if it is original and not rotted to the ground it could be between 15-40K but tough to tell without any pics.

25K mile cars should not have shot interiors unless stored open windows and animals, I would think. 125K (?)
Beyond that, it is an extremely desirable car. Revere Silver is that cool darker, almost greenish tint silver.

To bad about the headers, the original round port exhaust manifolds are a pain to source & expensive. And no repop's are available at the moment from ram air restorations. But any 72 455HO car is worth a look. and could be worth alot of $$$ if not rotted out and restored.

it would have to be a POST Body car to go into the ultra-low category you referenced.
There are some with production numbers that low - but i can't remember if that is a WW5 Post spec or Lemans Post Spec or GTO Post Spec ... but it will have to be a POST Body 455HO regardless. 2D37 is a Hardtop (non-Post) X is the engine identifier = 455HO 72 455 HO A-Body cars are all fairly low in production. But they are hard sales unless extremely reasonably priced for their condition. Would put them in the upper mid-range of GTO's as far as money goes. They have a small market share of fan base (72) Very great cars though As a reference - Check the classifieds on here for the 72 455HO GTO Automatic, #'s Drivetrain, Revere Silver, Heavily Hard Loaded with Options, fixxer-upper that sold. Took a while - but it went for a reasonable price when it did finally sell. |

72 HO455
Thanks for all the replies. Cammer the exhaust manifolds might be still with it. It is a one owner car and the owner ordered it new. He is a hoarder and I would guess he still has them. Bird the owner told me that the headliner had dropped down so I am assuming the rest of the interior will need replacing. our weather in the summer is very humid and then very cold in the winter. Cars don't do wellhere if not in heated garages in the winter and well ventilated ones during summer. I am going to send off to get the PHS on it and I will be able to tell you more soon. Ed

72 HO 455 GTO
I will also tell you that I was offered the car for 35k. I just want to be well versed in the facts so I can pay a fair price as the owner wants me to have it. He knows his kids will just sell it for whatever and he wants someone to enjoy it as much as he did. I'd love to come to terms with him and have it redone to drivability condition so he could have one last ride in it. Ed

If it has the WW5 option it's 1 of 290 which includes both stick and auto cars.

My honest opinion if it's a complete matching car, supposing it's rust free (no major body panel, frame or floor replacement needed) I would be talking with the seller. If it has the typical rust problems (rear window lower corners/channel, lower quarters, quarters above the bumper, trunk lid edge, door corners, front fender bottoms both front and rear), you are probably going to dump a load of cash into it to get it restored. I would pass on it if rust is a major issue.
I always advise people to find the most rust free example of what they want if it needs restoration. As an example, we recently completed a restoration of a very rare Mustang. It's a 1970 SCJ Mach 1, 1 of 3 built and optioned as such according to Kevin Marti. It was appraised by a notable expert at near 155K when completed. Because we started with a very rusty N.Y. car that required extensive work, the owner has exceeded that amount with his total investment. If it's any consolation to him, he took a First place a few weeks ago at a show held by a Mustang club in Hudson Valley, New York. |
