Sounds like keys or tumblers are worn out.
Our host,PY years specializes in locks for these cars. |

i would believe you, but many friends with gen2, gen3 and gen4 firebird can do it too.
start your engine, once the engine is running, try to pull off the key without turning it and tell me. |

Thats just a sign of wear. A lot of GM vehicles will allow you to do that after they start to get old.

well, that's curious, even with a new key.

You might try shooting some light lube in there.
When the key wears, all the brass fillings can jam up the tumblers. A new switch is the answer if lube doesn't help. |

My Mom's brand new 1970 Bonneville key would slide right out with the switch in 'Run' position, so would my '72 Esprit but none since then.

All 4 second Gen F-Bodies I've owned have done that.

My key comes out while the car is running, it is worn out, I have to make sure to turn the wheel and make sure the ignition locks or I can just start the car again without the key being in it.

When we were kids my friend would take his moms car(80's Chevy Celebrity) keys and half turn the ignition and pull the key out of the ignition and bring the keys back in the house. When she went to sleep we would cruise her car at night. You could turn the ignition without the key.It was all fun and games until the car stalled out about 4 blocks from his house. I'll never forget the look on his face.

Mine has been that way since 1993 when you take a turn hard the keys fly out of the collum.
My key is so bent & worn it only has one bump left on it but it starts the car. I have a new lock cyl I just have to get arround to changing it. My other 75 has an OK lock the keys stay in place, I think it's just a crappy design of the lock cylinder.

It is not really the IGNITION....it is the ignition lock
Mine has been that way since 1975... But I have a new one in waiting... |

Form74: To each his own...we all take risks and I don't think formulafr would be to happy if he ended up stuck in the middle of nowhere because "some dude on the forum said his has been like that for years" and now the whole cylinder is jacked up! If I can recall, it's a 30 minute fix and I would rather get stranded because of something that I didn't see coming, then something I did and was just to lazy to fix.

Since you felt the need to direct your responce to me........ Don't mean to offend or single any post out, just stating what the true part that is associated with this problem. Also as I previously stated mine has been this way for over 33 years, as well as the others that have seen this with their lock cylinders for long periods. So I think that some HAVE lasted quite a long time in this condition. Has anybody had a failure that has prevented them from starting their car? My bet would be NO, but let's see what others post. I don't think that this is a problem and I also don't think that anybody will ever get stranded because of this. JMHO |

Mine's been that way as long as I've had the car. The only downside I see is that the car can still be started (without the key) if the key has not been turned to the 'lock' position. I'm in the habit of putting my car in reverse and locking it when I walk away from it.
I did leave the house one day without the key and very nearly locked the ignition when I got to my destination.
