I talked to Wally at CC to get clarification on the cleaning instructions before I installed them last summer and he said the outside can be cleaned with solvents but soaking them in solvents will dissolve the grease in the wheels and specifically said not to do that. Just passing along what Comp told me.

Instructions from revised form dated 7-19-2020
Including Comp Cams part number 857-16
Pontiac hydraulic roller lifter

Instructions:
1. Lifter cleaning: Remove your new COMP Cams® lifters from the packaging. The lifters need
to be cleaned with mineral spirits or parts washing solvent first to remove any debris from
shipping or handling. Also check to ensure that the wheel rolls smoothly. NOTE: Rollers may
feel as though the wheels drag more than expected due to the grease packing for assembly
and break-in. This is normal. WARNING: The wheel needle bearings are pre-greased with
special OE grease. While cleaning, be careful to NOT blow out this grease for this is very vital
to initial break-in. Also do NOT clean with aerosol cleaners! And do NOT allow the wheel to
be spun by compressed air.
2. Lifter preparation: It is not necessary to “pre-pump” hydraulic lifters full of engine oil prior
to installation and valve adjustment. It is actually undesirable to do so as the “pumped up”
lifters will cause the valves to open during the adjustment process, rather than positioning the
lifter plunger in its operating position as it is supposed to do. Next, soak the lifters with COMP
Cams® Break-In Oil (Part #1590) or equivalent for at least two hours. Doing so ensures that
the lifters are adequately lubricated on their outer surfaces prior to installation. It may also
result in a quieter engine start-up as the oil in the bath may displace some air from the lifter’s
plunger reservoir. When you install the lifters, make sure they fit well. Any excess clearance or
tight lifters can cause damage to the camshaft, leading to engine failure. Verification of lifter to
lifter bore clearance is recommended. Note: Contact your engine builder or block
manufacturer for your specific clearances.

I haven’t used ANY Comp Cam product since the mid 90s when they had problems with soft cam cores (BBC). They knew it, but always claimed improper break in. There was 8-10 of us that all had issues. Every one of us went to a different brand of cam and lifters and never had another wiped lobe.

This thread is really pushing me to Ebay my new CC Hyd Roller lifters and purchase the Johnson lifters. My CC lifters are still new in the box.

Make sure they are available before you do. They were out of production for the longest time with no set date to run a batch of them.

Went through that months ago. Paul was already waiting 6 months for them calling every so often, and I waited another 2-3 months with still no date, so I gave up. I did 2 engines and 2 roller cams in that time frame and still no Johnsons available.

It's been a few months since then so maybe they are out there and available now.

Is it just me, or does that wheel now look like it has a pronounced taper? I'm thinking that wear looks fairly even, as in it didn't happen overnight? Could the lifter could have been slightly cocked slightly sideways, from like a loose (or even misaligned) link bar??

Wow, that's been quite a while now. Next time I talk to Paul I'll have to remember to ask him what he's using.

I am the one that got Jay S into the middle of this controversy by PMing him that when I bought my HR lifters with cam from Bullet, Tim Goolsby told me they were made by Morel. Mine look like the first picture in Jay's last post where he has 2 pictures. Mine have that little ridge in oil groove below oil hole. Also on the instruction sheet (which does not have Bullet's name on it) the very first line says "Installing and Adjusting Morel Lifters" and at the bottom of the page it says "Copyright 2017 John Callies, Inc. All Rights Reserved". (I bought cam and lifters from Bullet January 2018.) So in the words of Forest Gump "And that's all I know about that". Up to you guys to figure it out.

GM, Chrysler and Ford, all have issues with roller lifters/ camshafts. I dont know who their suppliers are, but I dont think any of them make a lifter/roller that lasts forever. I don't know why they fail, but its always a roller, with a flat spot. So is it material?

Thanks for the update, always nice to know if a company stands behind something.

I can't say we've had the same experience with other lifter companies.

The wear pattern on the pin indicates this too.
