Default 63 A/MP project

E-bay buy from NY state. Numbers matching 4cyl/auto "20 footer"
Using period correct (62-64 engine,trans & diff.) parts on build. Currently working on rust repairs. Picked up a 63 big car rear end w/ 3.42 posi unit from Steve @indiana pontiacs and axles from fabcraft. Looking for a 421 short block w/ 4bolt pump & timing cover.
NEED FRONT SHEET METAL- inner fenderwells, radiator baffles and fenders or parts car w/rust free front clip.
Any help with parts/info would be greatly appriciated.

New to this sight, I'm working on a 62-Tempest doing a ladder bar sus.
I do have a question on the width of the rear axle. I came up with 56-inch's
total width. Does that sound right with what you guys have in yours.Thanks

Design specs for rear tread width is 56.8 inches. (I assume this is outside-to-outside of axle flanges.)

I used a Mopar 8 3/4 rear end out of a 66-72 A body car. It measures 55.6" outside hub to hub. Drum brakes on it are 10"x2.5" and the wheel bolt pattern is 4.5", same as the tempest front hub bolt pattern. It did not need narrowing and will allow for a larger rear tire and 7"-8" rim.

The 1963 tempest OE wheel base is 112". I set mine at 113" for more tire clearance and it centered the wheel in the wheel well. Used a ladder bar and coil over suspension. All of the crossmember, pan hard bar, and shock mounting brackets are bolt in. Some pictures are in this thread.

Default rear axle width

With the 63's you have a ton of room for tire
The 62's on the other hand don't give much tire room at all
I should have done my 63 instead of the 62.
I just hadn't heard much on the 62's for the total width.
This sight is a book of imformation and I sure do appreciate
All the info and help from eveyone. thanks again.
I'm gona try and get some progress pics up as soon as
I get my buddy over here to help me out on the cumputer.

I used a 57 Ford rear that was also 57" hub to hub ... fit perfects in wheel wells. Also moved rear back 1/2".

Hey Guys if your using someones width you will also need to be using a wheel with the same back spacing and tire width. This is more true with a 61 and probable 62. Got 11" tires on the 63 with lots of room but only 8" and no room on the 61. Even the with of the brake drums adds up. 63 tempest 421sd with coil overs and ladder bars. 61 tempest wagon 421sd 4 speed with coil overs and ladder bars. Just my 2 cents

I used a Ford 9 inch but like you everything is bolted in. There's 8 bolts to remove and the transaxle can be put right back in.

Useing a 4.5 back spacing I'm going to stretch the wheel wells for a 9" slickX28"
Tall with a 7" rim. I know it's gona be tight but I like that full wheel well lock also
I'm gona mount my cross member just inside the rear floor area I want my ride
Hieght to look stock and I want this thing to hook on water LOL.
Right now I'm fighting the flu so not getting much done can't seam to shake
This bug. Again the info here is secomd to none.

IIRC the rear was originally 57.5" disc wheel face to disc wheel face. The 1st chassis guy took .5" off each side to straighten the rear, which was too much. I can get you an accurate measurement later this week. IIRC 57.5" and a 15 x 8" wheel with 4.5" offset was just about perfect (Don't take that 100% to heart until I measure again).

Wheels are 3.5" offset (had to change to this from a 4.5" offset because the chassis guy cut the rear) and I have either a 5/16" spacer or a 7/32" spacer, I don't remember which, I'll have to check.

I did move the axle back a hair to open up some clearance in the front of the wheel well. I'll get an accurate wheelbase measurement for you next week.

squeezed in 28x12 m/t radials on a 10 inch rim, still have room on inside so i will get backspace changed so tires are 1 more inch in, wheel wells are moved in up to frame.live and learn.

Default 62 Tempest

Well I'm feeling better now so I went out to the garage and got some more
Done on my 62 Tempest, I've got all the brackets off the rear axle and sand
Blasted it and sprayed some eche primer on it so it won't rust
I got my brackets cut for the front of the ladder bar just got to box them in.
Tomorrow I should be able to get the cross bar mocked up and ready for the
Installation I'm going to weld mine in I'm gona do mine the same way every body
Else is I want to drive it this summer. Hope to take it to Norwalk this year.
I'm getting pretty excited on this build can't wait to drive it.

I got my subframe brackets made got them welded to the ladder bar cross member
I got the ladder bar brackets welded on the cross member.
Tomorrow I'll weld the ladder bar assembly to the subframe
Then I can start the brackets for the rear axle. Still got to get some pics up here.

My lader bar cross member is welded in the car
Started making the brackets for the rear axle
I'm going to try and have them done tomorrow
And also start on the shock brakets
Don't mean to be a pain I'm just excited with this build
And trying to give everyone a progess report on this as
I continue to make progress. I've been so involved with
Working on the car I havent had time to get the picure
Taking thing figured out yet. Oh I started cutting the
Inner whell wells also.
