Same drum
Was the same front and rear brake drum used in ‘66 and ‘67? Any other years? Can somebody post a pic of correct front and rear drums for’66?

my recollection... Buick & Pontiac A-bodys used the same style 9.5" cast iron front drums in those years. Chevy always used their smooth style 9.5 drums (no fins) & Olds was using their "bell shaped" drums (at least up through '69 models).

Here's a picture of the rear drum on my 67. I swapped the fronts over to discs and put the drums over in the corner of my shop.

Just for reference 80's S10 rear drums are the same as GTO'S. They even have the same part number.

Terry,
My 66 GTO still wears all it’s OEM brake drums. Fronts still showing their Factory Red paint. Both rears after repainting Red years ago. I wish I hadn’t painted these back then. L27 = Dec. 27 L30 = Dec. 30 Chris.

Same drum
Chris, many thanks for these pics. The front drums appear to be painted only on the face of the drum but not around the perimeter. That may be just because of the angle of the photo or the result of the perimeter paint fading out from heat/cool cycles over many years. Were the front and rear drums painted red over all their outer surface?

Mass production painted drums were not precise.

Front drums are 9" x 2.5" and rear drums are 9" x 2". So the front drums are wider. I picked up a pair of used junkyard drums that I thought were front drums but they were only 9" x 2" inside so I could not use them. I think they could be used in the rear.

Good info. I’m trying to track down a set of 4 drums now that I have a better idea of exactly what to look for.

So the drums were painted red to show through the Rallye 1 wheels?
I am building a 66 now and would like to know if I should spray the drums red. |

FWIW;
I used the DC caliper paint over a year ago and it has held up well.

Hi Jeff,
What style brake drums are on your car? I’m not familiar with those ?? It looks like they have the brake shoe adjustment slot on the face of the drum. Chris.

My GTO came with Red interior, Red pinstripes, Red line tires and Red brake drums. The contrast against the Cameo white body is nice. The Tiger gold will look awesome also with Red drums. Chris.

That is a good question I can't answer. I looked in my files and can only offer that back then I had an open account at my Buddies Nappa store(s) I could just call in what I needed. Some invoices not showing exact part number but 90% of suspension and brake parts are/were Moog and/or United Brake. I do not think Moog made/make Drums. I'll keep digging as you peaked my failing memory Cheers.

Same drum
I bought my 66 in 1987, but haven’t touched it since about 1990. Finally started disassembling it for restoration a year ago. Decided to pull the wheels and check out the drums last week. Mine are very close/identical to what Chris posted, so it turns out this is one less thing I will have to track down. I remembered doing a brake job on it when I bought it, and thought I had just bought some aftermarket whatever drums just to make it roadworthy at the time. Fortunately, it looks like I had the original drums all along. Everything is off the car, labeled, and stored on shelves in plastic bins. Car goes to media blaster next week if the weather is dry and clear. This is my 4th restoration( 64 and 65 GTO and 65 Catalina 2 + 2) so I know what a long haul I’m in for. I’m sure I’ll be back here often during the process.
