Baldwin also has the B9 long filter. I noticed the new WIX filter size change this summer. Had to go back to my NAPA guys and get Delco to fit my wrench.

Which filter does Baldwin cross reference with the wix 51258? I have been using the Wix on my 462 and just went to reorder but Summit no longer carries it. What is the consensus for current best/safest filter? Thanks

Wix or Purolator for me...but i'm biased as I used to work for purolator (many yrs ago) making MILIIONS of oil filters every year. I now the parts inside as I maintained the tools that made those parts

I just changed the Wix filter on one of my tractors, it was about 1.5 years old, the new, exact same part number Wix you could look down inside and it was different. Good different/ Bad different .. I don't know, but it did have a slightly different construction inside. Not sure why the same part number would be different at all.
However .. the new Wix did come from Amazon, which is not known for their diligence keeping out counterfeit items.

For what it's worth, having started this thread, I guess I feel like given all the feedback here I'll still probably trust the Wix filters until proven otherwise. Might cut one open if the next batch look/feel significantly different.

Just pause and think about the vast majority of people who own and drive cars and they never know or care what brand oil filter is on it. That’s if they even have the oil changed. Engine failures are rare and can be attributed to severe neglect or substandard lifters (GM etc.).

A lot of people don't care what they buy, and many don't bother with an oil analysis either, or even know what that is. Which would tell you if your oil filter is even doing a good job or not, and also tell you if your air filter is doing its job or not, another recent discussion with no data to back up claims.
If you aren't at least cutting filters open, doing oil analysis, etc... who's to say. Now I say these things and all Ive ever had in my hands, done oil analysis on and cut open for years to date are USA made wix filters. At least that is what it says on the filter. I haven't seen one yet that says it's made in another country but I'm sure they exist and would be reasonable to think there might be constructional differences. Not to imply USA made us better, as I stated it doesn't mean whole lot these days. But cutting them open to inspect regularly and doing an occasional oil analysis will at least give you some clues. |

Mann-Hummel is huge and spread out all over the world. In my opinion their quality has always been top notch and can be trusted regardless of where the filter is made. In my opinion there are filters made by other companies that are also quality. The bottom shelf filter of any manufacturer is likely made as cheaply as possible. On the other hand, spend a couple more dollars and get a well made mid to top tier filter regardless of the manufacturer. Too many oil filters dissected and shown to refute that.

With my 2009 Sierra Denali, I changed my oil faithfully at 3000 miles. I saw that Walmart had GM oil filters, thought maybe I could save a couple of bucks. My mechanic says only use the GM oil filters when performing oil changes on LS engines.. as the picture reflects not all GM parts are created equal…. Can you guess which one is from Walmart?. Needless to say I wont be using the Walmart version….. maybe I will cut the Walmart version open to see what it looks like on the inside?

Yep, just because it says a brand name on the product doesnt mean it's the genuine article. I mentioned this earlier in this thread.
Just because it's cheaper doesn't mean it's a deal. Better off buying from the main supplier, even if that means paying more. Just depends on how bad quality means to you. |

I posted this a few months ago when I noticed the difference in the threaded back plate holes on a STP filter made by champ labs and was concerned about the difference from all the previous filters Ive used on my pontiacs & other vehicles... turns out champion labs is the first to bring this new design to the market & maybe others will follow, has more/larger holes for better flow which is a good thing, STP states 15 gpm flow which is higher than many other brands Ive seen. Interesting info from auto zone on champion labs filters. https://contentinfo.autozone.com/zne..._baseplate.pdf |

That's a really good bulletin from Champion labs. It shows design changes on a variety of their filters. Just looking at the changes, I don't see where more holes is a cost saving measure. To the contrary, it looks like it would improve flow and efficiency as they claim. Champion labs is a big player in the filter game. They make a wide variety of filters of various price points. From cheap, barely adequate filters for the quick lube shops under private label to good quality filters for NAPA in the mid-price "Performer" line. The "brand names" they produce under is probably a list of 40-50 brands. There is a huge "Fram" filter plant not far from where I live. They also produce filters for dozens of private label brands in every color of the rainbow. They have different quality media and seals/valves based on price point.

After reading post from 78W72 it prompted me to search for any GM oil filter bulletins. I just been having this conversation with my Son as we both own 2022 and newer GM diesel trucks. I went to the Baldwin 40150 as it cross-over was from GM 12684038 oil filter. My son says he's staying with the PF63. Interesting stuff especially when referencing warranty.

The GM bulletin is about using the correct PF63 and 64 oil filters instead of using the similar sized PF48 filters in the newer engines.
